Google’s Chrome Web Store Rolls Out Today

Google announced the opening of the long-awaited Chrome Web Store today. The store was first announced at Google I/O earlier this year.

A developer preview was made available in August, so developers could upload apps and experiment with packaging, installing, and integrating payments into them. Now the rest of us get to see the fruits of this project.

Google Pairs Chrome Web Store With Checkout

It looks like Google is either going to hobble the Chrome Web Store or (more likely) help Google Checkout.  The company’s announced that developers who intend to use Chrome Web Store Payments to charge for apps must have Checkout accounts.

That’s a big step, considering the degree to which Google Checkout has failed to catch on.  By pairing it with the Chrome Web Store, Google’s shown that it’s not ready to just cede the market to PayPal.

Google Announces Chrome Web Store

During the very long and drawn out keynote here at Google I/O today, there were many speakers and many topics addressed, including a number of new announcements from Google. Among these was the announcement of the Chrome Web Store, dubbed an open marketplace for web apps that helps people find the best web applications across the internet and allows developers to reach new users. The announcement was only a preview.
