PlayStation Network “Customer Appreciation Program” Detailed
[ Business]

We’ve known that some sort of apology schwag pack has been in the pipeline since the early days of the PlayStation Network outage. As the downtime stretched to nearly one month, many were wondering how Sony was going to make up for all of that lost online multiplayer time. To be fair, many others weren’t concerned at all, stating that Sony doesn’t owe them any sort of merchandise as an apology since the PSN is a free service anyways.

Well, whether you want it or not, Sony has announced the details of their apology, dubbed the “Welcome Back Customer Appreciation Program.”

Over on the PlayStation blog, embattled updater Patrick Seybold says that the welcome back package will be made available shortly after Sony has “fully restored the service.” Of course, online multiplayer was restored over the weekend, along with other services like chat and trophy comparison. But “full restoration” has been hinted as late as May 31st.

Without further ado, here is your appreciation package PlayStation faithful:

All PlayStation Network customers can select two PS3 games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

Dead Nation
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD + Fury

For PSP owners, you will be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
ModNation Racers
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation

  • A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.
  • 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers.
  • Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.
  • Existing Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription.
  • Additional 30 days + time lost for existing members of Music Unlimited Premium/Basic subscription free of charge for existing Premium/Basic members.
  • To welcome users Home, PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.

So, how does that sound? Kotaku has an interesting take on the package, saying that based on retail prices for the games and PS plus account costs, Sony thinks that gamers’ inconvenience is worth about $104. Of course, that doesn’t take into account the 100 free virtual items and the TBA selection of “on us” rentals.

To those of you who thought Sony needed to do something like this – is it enough?

to be honest i am more than happy with both the apologetic stance that Sony has taken and the ownership that they have taken over the issue.
I can’t see microsoft having the same stance and i am more interested in them putting their hands up and fessing up and making any kind of an offer than what it is.
I’ll take full advantage of whatever they offer but good on them. refunding me for a service i don’t pay for (Altough inherant in the price i pay for online games)is a win win!

thats pretty stupid we should be able to pick want we want to download like have a week where whatever is free or at least a bigger selection but i guess i cant complain its free

Well, coming from a generation where Duke Nukem was the first online game I ever played.. I think Sony has done a great job of offering us more than we should bargain for. I know what your thinking angry online gamers. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.. Nobody be as greedy as those hackers. They tried to steal your/ your parents, credit info and Sony gave you some free s@$&. So in the interest in trying to save our credit….I give Sony credit. Trust me it’s due.

Im just glad Sony has restored multiplayer…I dont need an apology because we have free online but 2 FREE games thats good i acept the apology

I am happy with this “apology pack,” even though I own 2/5 games listed. I like that Sony took ownership of the situation, instead of just saying, “sorry hope you’ll still be a loyal customer.” This makes me glad I didn’t sell my PS3 for a 360.

  • nate

It sounds good except the games 4 ps3 could be a little bit better.

  • Tim

Meh, I already have the two retail games. And am not a big fan of downloadable games from PSN. Grrreeaatttt…. thanks for nothing sony. Basically you’re giving me a ten dollar game that I don’t want

ill take what there giving but i think 100$ gift cards way better idea then we get whatever we want!! sry for saying it but what there offering is old and worst sellers!!!

  • priaprism

What about the free year of credit protection that was promised ? I can’t find any info on what I think is the most valuable consession Sony promised for doing such a poor job protecting our personal info!

  • errrr

So…You’re going to give me a package worth double what I pay annually for the shitty ass microsoft connection as compensation for a month during which I couldnt use a free service? Yes please.

  • Charles

I don’t feel like Sony owes us anything. Maybe they could send a commando force (not virtual) after the low lifes who hacked the system

  • avi

i thank you sony it wasnt needed but u showed u care which is good enough for me thank you

  • Gary

This is better than what Microsoft did for my RROD! They sent me a free month of XB Live! I’ve had free access to online games with Sony for 3 years and they didn’t rush their hardware to market to the tune of a 30% plus fail rate! Don’t worry Microsoft…I still love my third Xbox 360! Thanks for the free games and movies Sony! Good move!
