Nearly half (49%) of Americans agree with the statement "In the future, there will be no more newspapers because everyone will be getting their news over the Internet," according to a new survey from Arbitron and Edison Research.

This is a significant increase compared with results from just three years ago when only 27 percent agreed with the same statement.

"The average consumer’s expectation that newspapers will ‘always be there’ has eroded dramatically since we began tracking this question in 2007" said Bill Rose, senior vice president of marketing at Arbitron.

"This perception cut across nearly all age groups, except those age 65 and older" added Edison President Larry Rosin.

The findings come from a national survey of 1,753 people ages 12 and over. This is the 18th in a series of studies Arbitron and Edison have conducted since 1998 on topics relating to the Internet and New Media. The complete study will be presented in a webinars on April 8 at 2PM EDT.

I remember that there was a trend in the 80′s called “paperless office” that didn’t work, today we have even more paper usage since we want to print a lot of internet information that was not available before the internet age and the home internet usage we do, I think that people that voted in favor did not realize that the statement is a tricky one because it gives you an answer that may not be accurate, the answer that you get depends on the question that you ask, getting the news over the internet does not mean that the newspaper will disappear but it can mean that the “paper” will evolve into electronic paper, you buy this E-paper at a news stand, and after reading you keep the “paper”, if you are subscribed to the feeding the next day your E-paper will receive wireless fresh news, if you are not you can “recharge” it at the news stand.

We are here folks and the newspapers are dying a slow death before our eyes. No longer do people grab that copy of the daily news and many newspapers are moving to an online presence to secure or maintain their advertising base. Who would have thought that the Yellow Pages would go out of print? In many areas, Yellow Pages are no longer printed. With so many devices and news outlets we have today the casual perusing of the newspaper is about dead.
