Google has put out a new Webmaster Help video. This time, Matt Cutts shares his biggest surprise of the year for the web spam team.

“I would probably say the sheer number of people who continued to be snookered by snakeoil salesman products…that promise to instantly rocket you to number one,” says Cutts. “I would expect that in 2012, people would be a little bit more skeptical about that, especially after we do a pretty good job of finding various link networks, different ways of spamming Google – all that sort of stuff.”

“A lot of the times, black hat guys will use a particular technique, and when it looks like it’s reaching the end of its lifespan, they’ll package it up, they’ll sell it to you in an ebook, or they’ll sell it to you as a script package, or a recurring service, or a link network that you can subscribe to,” he says. “And I’m like, I don’t get why people would believe this, and they’re like, ‘Well, there’s two other guys on the forum who say that it’s great,’ and it’s like, well, they’re named Dog Fart Jr. and Black Hat Assassin, and the package that you’re thinking about buying is spam forum software. You think those guys don’t know how to make sock puppet accounts that say, ‘Yeah, this is great, has anybody else used it?…I love it!’”

Google sure does love the ol’ “Dog Fart” reference.

Personally I have a great appreciation for Cutts taking time to make these videos. I especially appreciate videos that “demote” link farms, spam services, etc. because the faster these places are taken out, the sooner clients of legitimate SEO companies won’t have to contend with ill-gotten rankings. Go Matt!

Kinda like all those “oh, another cool Matt Cutts video”… sock puppets.

They wish they could control everything to do with the web, but unfortunately, for them, they can’t.

LOL. What kind of brain dead idiot would buy something called Dog Fart Jr. and Black Hat Assassin?

    Now I’ve heard it all!

Needless to say the, snakeoil salesman will always promise to instantly rocket you to number one. Reason been it can still be done.

“especially after we do a pretty good job of finding various link networks, different ways of spamming Google”.

A “a pretty good job” is not enough. Until they find them all (which they never will) snakeoil salesman will keep promising and actually achieving front page until they are caught out. LOL then they will simply sell it and create another program/scam!

“A lot of the times, black hat guys will use a particular technique, and when it looks like it’s reaching the end of its lifespan, they’ll package it up, they’ll sell it to you”.

I don’t see the point of that video! We all know the web’s full of snakeoil products, and idiots do unfortunately fall for it, because some of the snake oil products do actually work.

Until Google themselves perfect their algorithms, the snake oil will sell.

I’m just surprised that someone would buy a product called Dog Fart Jr. and Black Hat Assassin!

Google itself is a dog fart. Ironic.

I must admit to being an idiot. I bought a couple of snake oil WP plugins from the WSO site early on because they looked like they might help me get more backlinks and social shares. But in hindsight these plugins probably exposed me to Google’s algorithm changes and did more harm than good. When you complain about them on the WSO forum you get blackballed. And once you buy anything there you get put on spam email lIsts that are harder to get off than Readers Digest promos.

It is a real big task to manage a website and do the marketing my oneself especially the SEO aspect of it. But I think it is safer to do SEO by oneself, because if one falls innocently into the hands of any of these “sweet mouthed” SEO claimed gurus, one is destined to be ruined in their cleaver deals

  • bass man

Google only sell his own products
he kick off other products from no 1 pages,

  • knysna

Its not Googles fault. That crap works on all search engines. Needless to say Googles latest algorithms are at least exposing and starting to eliminate these black hat technique/programs (give credit were credits due) and further more, its unfair to suggest and crucify the SEO world because of “snake SEO’s”. There are, and always will be legitimate and honest SEO’s out their.

“But I think it is safer to do SEO by oneself, because if one falls innocently into the hands of any of these ‘sweet mouthed’ SEO claimed gurus, one is destined to be ruined in their cleaver deals”.

The simplicity of 1+1=2. Do research and deal with SEO’s that have genuine testimonials and not self written crap on their websites. In other words follow their profiles, accounts, forum posts, etc. And if they haven’t got a social record, screw them!!

Then they are like me, less worthy of a piss pot full of crap (if you know what I mean?)

“We do a really good job of finding link networks etc etc etc..”

No you do not. The SERPS are littered with spam.

You are doing a mediocre job of it.

where from we know, matt cutts? May be it you selling this tactics at seo forums. You definitively have power to rank any site like youtube or wikipedia to google N1.

It seems Cutt trying to tell us if Google would try to remove useless sites from SERP and need help from everyone to do it. They already know on how to remove the bad sites but they carefully doing it as so many sites will be affected. Then, they remove it one by one which is taking forever.

You should just build your website with good content and a good user experience that I know is true but how does Google want us to market our websites ? How are you suppose to market without spamming? In Googles terms all advertising is spamming unless you are using Google Adwords of course.
