  1. Long tail keywords are great in local searches where people are searching for a particular service such as, pressure washing cincinnati oh, power washing cincinnati oh , deck cleaning cincinnati oh, etc.
Great organic search results w/o paying for any ppc advertising.

    • Good point Mike. Long-tails are much easier to rank for in the local markets.

This article was favoring more on the global side of search where competition is more fierce.

  2. My question is, if you are using the google adwords tool to find long tail keyword phrases, wouldn’t you already have to know what those phrases are? Typing in a search for the high traffic 1-2 keywords will not give you any long tail results.

Or is there a tool somewhere that will give you all the long tail phrases when you enter the top keywords for your category?

    • Hi Perriann,

You can use Google Adwords tool to get long-tail keywords. It would depend on the market, but most of my tail keywords will generate long-tail (3 or more) keywords with the tool. Again, I also target long-tail keywords that are not competitive and lower traffic… gradually building up your traffic using low hanging fruit.

Good article. The fact that long tail is still being discussed just verifies that the implementation of Google Instant has had little to no effect on the way that people search. Remember back in September when just about everyone was proclaiming the death of long tail? Ironically, I don’t think I’ve come across one person in 8 months that uses or likes Instant. Just another “fail” that Google can add to their list, along with Wave and Buzz.

  4. Hi Dan,

You’re right that PPC can be extremely effective at working the tail. I recently did some analysis on keywords containing different numbers of words, and found that longer-tailed keywords tended to have lower CPCs due to their lesser competition:

I also found that since people making longer-tailed searches were further along in the buying cycle and had likely carried out the large majority of their pre-purchase research, conversion rates were also higher for long tails.
