On his radio show Tuesday Ed Schultz, progressive commentator and host of MSNBC’s The Ed Show, attacked conservative radio host Laura Ingraham by calling her a “right wing slut.”

“President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday but you know what they’re talking about, like this right-wing slut, what’s her name, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she’s a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama’s doing it, they’re working him over.”

Here’s the audio of the remark:

This remark obviously turned heads. Whether you agree with the core of his argument or not, the language used is quite acerbic. Schultz has been in hot water over comments before, after he called Republicans “bastards” earlier this year.

MSNBC suspended Schultz for his remarks for a week without pay:

MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Ingraham weighed in on Twitter:

Ingraham also responded late last night via Facebook, also taking the chance to promote her upcoming book:

The crude comments made about me by Ed Schultz on his radio program: First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book “Of Thee I Zing.” Now I’m tempted to insert one additional zing–about men who preach civility but practice misogyny.

Last night on the Ed Show, Schultz apologized to Ingraham, saying his remarks were “vile and inappropriate.”

“I am deeply sorry, and I apologize,” said Schultz. “It was wrong, uncalled for and I recognize the severity of what I said. I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness. ”

Just a couple of hours ago, Ingraham tweeted this:

Others in the political realm have responded on Twitter. Former MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann has defended Ingraham, even against those who attempt to justify Schultz’s remarks. In response to a tweet that said “It was a qualified ‘talk slut’, not a reference to her personal life,” Olbermann tweeted:

@nowyre Bullshit – would you be ok with Beck saying that about Maddow? 16 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

And unsurprisingly, Sarah Palin has something to say about it:

You know, I’m actually behind Ed on this one. I watched his apology, and have a firm believe it was totally sincere. So, of course, I had to hear this awful thing; what a dissapointment – nothing near as bad as I was expecting after that apology. I don’t believe he was in any way referring to Ingrahm sleeping around, regardless of whether or not she does, and don’t really have a problem with the word itself. A rose is a rose is a rose. I am amazed the MSNBC thinks they are so high & mighty, what with all the new oil commercials they are now playing over and over and over. Glad they can through stones . . .

Yeah, it’s pretty obvious that he wasn’t referring to anything sexual, but I guess the word itself has enough weight to force MSNBC to take action. “Right wing slut” is definitely not the worst thing I’ve heard coming out of the mouths of other talk radio hosts, however.

Yeah, it was “sexual”. Slut as in “SLUT” when you talk about beers, men and women. I’m shocked the other moron, Olbermann came to her defense. The guy is a left wing nutjob who wouldn’t recognize a T-bone. He must be trying to clean up his act trying to get his job back.

Sad is the day when we can’t call a slut a slut.

Sean Hannity aired concert footage of Ted Nugent calling then-Sen. Barack Obama a “piece of shit” and referring to then-Sen. Hillary Clinton as a “worthless bitch.” After showing the clip, Hannity referred to Nugent as a “friend and frequent guest on the program.” Hannity didn’t apologize to Obama or Clinton, and Fox didn’t punish him.

Fox News’ Glenn Beck has twice called Sen. Mary Landrieu a prostitute, and accused President Obama of being a “racist” with a “deep-seated hatred for white people, or the white culture.” Beck never apologized and Fox didn’t punish him.

Ed Shultz called Laura Ingraham a slut, then gave her a public and private apology for his words. MSNBC punished him.
