Japan/USA Final Brings Out Facebook’s Ugly Side

By: Chris Richardson - July 19, 2011

Social media, because of things like this, every time I think I can’t quit you, something like this shows up and I’m disgusted with myself for even being associated with the applicable platform. Now, I’m not talking about screw ups from famous people, or Lamebook-worthy posts, either. No, I’m talking about the “Internet tough guy” racism things like Twitter and Facebook seem to harbor.

The kind of racism I’m talking about is the kind where otherwise normal people issue some of the most pathetically vile posts one can imagine; and they seem to do it when they can hide behind the cloak of Xbox Live or, in this case, Facebook. It’s akin to a hit and run, with most of the simple-minded people who issue these kinds of posts choosing to hide behind their wall of perceived anonymity. I mean, at least the KKK and the girl from the UCLA video — we haven’t forgotten about you, Alexandra — are brave enough to face the pubic.

The same is doubtfully true for those who willingly hide behind what ever barrier of perceived invisibility and post things like the stuff found on Facebook, which was collected and then submitted to Reddit. What we have is a collection of the ignorant Facebook posts that appeared shortly after Japan beat the United States in the World Cup final, and it shows that when you mix an idiot with a keyboard and a touch of bravery due to a “they can’t see me” attitude, you get things like the following.

Stay Classy

Besides an inordinate amount of World War II/Hiroshima mentions — although, the Nagasaki references were few and far between; I’m guessing that’s not as popular with that kind of crowd — there are comments that skip the poor taste taunts and skip right to the racism with gems like “slant eyes” and “gook.” Talk about making someone proud to be an American… There’s really not much to offer here except the knowledge that many of these Internet toughs would wilt like a spring flower in the summer heat if they were ever confronted by their stupidity.

Perhaps they would go for the “my account was hacked” excuse, but that only works for professional athletes. No, what we have is a bunch of sore-loser kids who think they are invincible because of whatever privacy settings they have on their Facebook account, and so, they feel like they can say anything without repercussion. I just hope these fake tough guys are stupid enough to not delete that crap, just in case a future employer ever searches for one of the featured Facebook pages.

If we’re lucky, one of these witty individuals might have a person of Japanese decent as a future boss. I long to see the amount of backtracking if that ever happens.

You would think that by now people would understand that, when it comes to social networking, nothing is 100% private. Everything you say and do on a social media site is recorded somewhere. You never know what someone might stumble upon and how that will impact your reputation. The same is true for brands and businesses that use social media.

As I get older, I understand the saying “youth is wasted on the young” more and more, because, just from looking at the collection, it’s a bunch of bored kids flapping their gums on Facebook. I just hope that, in a few years, they learn the error of their thoughtless Facebook updates.

I’m sorry Mr. Richardson, but from what I read here, it seems you may have been raised in a bubble. I’m not trying to put you or anyone else down but what I am doing is simply responding to your article with my opinion. I respect that every one ( at least in our United States of America) is entitled to their own opinion, but givin your article and any like it to follow as well as any proceeding it, one day we may not be entitled to an opinion any more. Those posted opinions you subjected me to that I would not have seen otherwise for I don’t browse facebook, made me sad, just as hearing that kind of vile crap from any source makes me sad as well, but it never surprise’s me, that’s just the way it is. What used to surprise me when many years ago I first started reading or listening to world news is how the status quo was established in huge part by what the “news” writers penned. I really can’t see what the hell your point is sir, but I would just like to point out that I’m in the dark as to how these IDIOTS as you so labeled them all are hiding behind any cloak of invisibility when their pictures are are right there in plain site for the world to see???

You do know your friends can see what you write on Facebook, right? So even if you think you’re invisible to the rest of the world — CLEARLY, what’s going on here — your friends can out the stupid crap you say, hence such sites like Lamebook and the iPhone auto-correct stuff.

My point is, the Internet has given birth to a lot of wanna-be racists who wouldn’t say any of the garbage they post to people in real life. Instead, they prefer to hide behind the perceived cloak of Facebook-provided invisibility.

Furthermore, the “entitled to your opinion” thing is off base. They can say what they want. With that in mind, I am also free to hope that these stupid statements come back to haunt them at some point in their lives, maybe from a future employer or a higher learning institute.

      Thanks for reading.

Mr. Richardson, I apologize for you having to take more of your time to come back and clarify what your saying and I also thank you. Perhaps I’m the one in the bubble!I was really of base. I see your point quite accurately now and I can fully appreciate the point. Thank you once again and GOD help the P.O.S. that does come out of their closet and tries speaking that vile crap about human beings in public where we can reach them! (only my opinion!)
