iPhone Battery Life Still A Problem After iOS 5.0.1 Update
[ Technology]

Yesterday, Apple released the first update to iOS 5 to users, with the promise that it would solve those nagging issues regarding quick battery drain in the iPhone 4S. The update, iOS 5.0.1, was released to developers a little while back and garnered mostly positive reviews.

Now, after a day of iPhone users installing the update, we are getting some reaction concerning its efficacy. And it appears the the update has failed to solve many users’ battery woes.

There are multiple threads on the official Apple forums regarding the battery life situation in the iPhone 4S, and they have been hot since the release of iOS 5.0.1. Here are some of the posts about the update:

Upgraded to 5.0.1 this morning. Still draining at the exact same rate. Unplugged with a full charge 2 1/2 hours ago, and already down to 80% with light usage. Just lost 2% during a 15 minute shower. I see no difference at all.

Same here. Updated about 1.5 hours ago, battery has drained 20% since then with no usage! This is awful!

New update is no help at all. I opened the safari and lost 2 % just by opening the safari browser…This really *****

After the first few hours I thought my battery life had improved, but it appears it didn’t. I ended up returning my over priced $55 Otterbox case, and getting a 2100mah battery case for $10 more. THAT has solved the issue, as I am still running on the external battery a day later, with heavy use, bright screen and everything on. It’s ashame that had to be the solution, but it was either that or go through the hassle of returning the phone and paying the restocking fees.

Did the update last night fully charged my phone overnight and havent used it yet and down 10% in two hours.

Clearly, many users are seeing no improvement from the iOS update. The discussion on Twitter follows this trend:

Yeah, 5.0.1 didn’t help my iPhone 4 battery problems at all. Off the charger for two hours and already down 25%. 48 minutes ago via HootSuite · powered by @socialditto

Battery life on new iPhone no better with patch :( 38 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

I’m not so sure 5.0.1 is helping my iPhone 4S’s battery; already down to 80% this morning after very little usage. 41 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

To be fair, some users are reporting that the update did positively affect their battery life:

My iPhone 4S’s battery seems to be lasting longer. 46 minutes ago via Tweetbot for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

iPhone 4S battery life definitely improved after updating. 45 minutes ago via Twitter for Mac · powered by @socialditto

Of course, some users might have been looking for a miracle and are simply holding their phone to too-high expectations. Many people underestimate the amount that they use their phones, and therefore overestimate how much battery life they should have at any particular moment.

But there seems to be a incredibly large sample of users that have seen no improvement with the update, which is a problem for Apple. The battery issues have plagued the iPhone 4S since day one, and many users seem to be getting incredibly frustrated.

Are you experiencing battery problems with your iPhone? Did you install the update? Did it help? Let us know in the comments.

I just got my iPhone 4S yesterday and immediately updated to IOS 5.01. Pulled my phone off the charger this morning at approx 04:30 and in about 7 hours of light to moderate usage, my battery is down to 35%. This could be a show stopper for me. My old android phone had far far superior battery life than this iphone.

Upgraded last night…. battery life still terrible. This is my first Iphone and looks like it might be my last if Apple cant fix this issue.

Battery on 4s was fine before update 5.01 Now it drains fast even with everything possible turned off.

    Wish I never updated………. Why of why…….

    Thanks Josh for posting.

Upgraded to 5.01 and battery is draining even faster. I didn’t have an issue before. Now down 12% in 12 minutes.

Try double clicking the home button and lok at the window along the bottom.
See how many apps are open & running in the background. Press and hold any icon and a small circle with a “-” sign appears on each icon and is wiggling. Press the “-” sign and close al open apps.
The microprocessor and other components use up energy running those apps. The more apps open, the quicker the battery discharges.
Many longtime users of iPhones I showed this to never knew about this and had dozens of open apps.

After downloading and installing the ios 5.0.1 patch this morning, the batter life on my iPhone 4s is draining even faster than before the patch. The download for my iPad seems to be working (after downloading ios 5 to my iPad, I noticed the battery life to be draining faster than before; after downloading the ios 5.0.1, the battery life for the iPad seems to have stabilized). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Part of the problem is everybody wants the faster processor, dual cameras, to be connected to the internet, and then complain about battery life. Maybe Apple should develop the first battery to run on water? How else are they going to keep a phone as compact as they can, as light in weight as they can, and still offer a long battery life?

I didn’t see any improvement on IOS5.0.1 for battery life, and even I noticed my Iphone4s’ battery drooped faster. The IOS5.0.1 didn’t help any all but make things worse. I got no idea why apple release this garbage firware before they tested it working.

I have an iPhone 4 and upgraded to iOS 5.0.1. Boy this is a huge mistake as my battery life goes down a percent every 4 minutes. Wish there was a way I could go back to my reliable iOS 4.

I don’t find any difference with my iPhone’s Battery life after the update. :\ Lame I say.

  • Jeremy

I downloaded the update on Friday morning. Didn’t see much of a difference. Yesterday I fully charged the phone before heading to work. After 4 hrs 50 mins of some Facebook and Internet surfing the phone was down to 1%. This really pisses me off because that was one of the reasons I got rid of my android. If this is gonna be a constant I’m better off going back to it. I have put a call in to Apple to see if there is any ideas of what can be done. I didn’t have that bad of a issue with the system before the update. There is definitely some major issues with the phones or system.

  • Paul Webb

I downloaded ios 5.0.1 update for battery life etc and it has not made any difference to extending battery life. use battery pro instead for 69p. I have and are still having problems with 3g connection since the ios 5.0.1.

  • Jean

Updated to iOS 5. Battery extremely bad. Back of phone hot. Updated to 5.0.1 and it is worse

  • ELIAS KOJAK

after the update still the battery go down but i found a temporary
solution which is by closeing the location-based iads and the setting time zone from system services and the battery life is getting better

  • Trevia

My battery life has gotten worse since doing the update. I’ve turned off all notifications and implemented the other recommendations to preserve the battery. Nothing works! This is very frustrating and I’m at the point of looking at other options.

I just updated to 5.01. I have’nt tested it much yet. I have a few tips for you guys. In settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, turn off time zone support. Make sure blue tooth & wifi are turned off if you’re not using them. In location services, I’ve turned off everything except Find My Iphone. Look for system services in Location services and turn off Setting Time Zone. Under Notifications, I’ve turned off eveything except weather widget, phone, stock widget & mail. I have’nt messed with brightness, but this may help also. I’ve turned off everything in iCloud except Find My iPhone. There are a few more settings you can play with. Try experimenting alittle bit. Good Luck

Why don’t we just turn the entire phone off? That would save battery life! Seriously though, I understand what you are saying & what you have listed has been recommended on different sites, but that all kinda defeats the purpose of having a smartphone like the iPhone! We shouldn’t have to perform all those tweaks just to get more than 5 hours of battery life! I’ll never give up my iPhone, but come on apple…3 months and you still can’t fix this issue?!?! If it’s just that the device is a battery hog & we have to live with it, be honest and tell us that!!!

  • Allan

Absolutely of no help with the software update.

  • Allan

Battery even appears to drain quicker now

  • kelvin

i updated my iPhone 4s day one of the update and i haven’t seen any improvement in the battery life what so ever….it is really frustrating to me because i didn’t have these issues on my iPhone 4…apple really needs to fix this issue and fast.

  • Maria

I have an iPhone 4. NO problems with battery life at All UNTIL I updated! Now It just drained 8% in 5 min!!!!! WTH?

  • Brent

Just like the antenna issue of the iPhone 4, no software could solve the issue. The problem is that they crammed more powerful hardware/software into a device with the same sized battery, of course the battery life is gonna be bad.

  • Curtis Cline

My 3GS drains before the end of the day now. I used to go 2 days and have battery left.

  • lillian@aol.com

My phone has been off the charger for 1 hour and it is down to 43%. I used to have it off the charger and used it for an hour and it would be at 80%. WTF?

  • http://www.newiphone5.net/ iphone 5

The new iOS 5.0.1 release fixed my problem a little.

  • James

I’m on my third iPhone 4s and in not a happy bunny. On standby I get about 1% loss per hour which is not bad but as soon as you use it with any apps etc it goes down by 10% an hour. I also have yellow screen problems agghhhh apple what have you done . My iPhone 4 ( that I stupidly gave to my wife) runs perfectly on iOS 5.1 with a great blue/white display !!!. I’m keeping number 2 and sending back no 3 as the screens better . And I bought a power case which is great. Good luck all you pissed of iPhone users

  • Margaret

Just reading this article I went down 3%! For the love of apple come on!

PS. I have nothing but this open!

  • Roger

My Battery is worse after the update …fully charged this morning ..now after 4 hours down to 58% and all I’ve done is check my e mails twice

  • Josh

I had the battery problem after the update and the IT guy at work said if the phone is getting hot it is a problem with the phone & the exchange server. He deleted my email account on my phone then created a new account with the same info and it seems to have fixed the problem. He believes the phone is trying to get info from the server constantly and that is what is draining the battery. He said he has seen the problem with several I phones in the past not just 4s. I have to speculate that the update caused this condition on my phone.

  • Rie

Before the patch I turned off all iCloud options. Seemed to gave done the trick. But after patch phone is running hot again. Now I’ve turn off iCloud completely (I still had back up on), which means I can only sync when its connected to pc.

98% when I did this. After half hour 96% and holding. More importantly phone is no longer hot. Please tell me what you come up with.
