iOS 5.1 Jailbreak April Fool’s Day Prank Angers Some

An April Fool’s Day gag drew the ire of a number of would-be iOS jailbreakers yesterday. A post on iJailbreak.com proclaimed that a new untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak for A5 and A5X iOS devices (iPhone 4S, iPad 2, new iPad) was available. The article offered users a supposed link to download the AprilRa1n jailbreak tool and jailbreak their devices.

Of course, there were plenty of hints that this was a gag. If the name AprilRa1n wasn’t enough of a giveaway, the phrase “april-fools-joke” in the article’s URL should’ve been a clue. Failing that, there’s the disclaimer at the bottom of the article:

AprilRa1n Disclaimer

Finally, if that wasn’t enough, there’s the download link. Instead of initiating a download of the AprilRa1n tool, the download link goes to the following video:

Some people, however, weren’t quite sharp enough to pick up on the hints, and went ahead and updated their devices to iOS 5.1 anyway. In times past, this wouldn’t be too much of a problem: just roll back to the previous version of iOS, re-jailbreak, and you’re done. It’s a pain in the neck, but not a huge problem. Unfortunately, though, Apple took steps this time around to ensure that the upgrade to iOS 5.1 is a one-way trip. Once you’ve updated, there’s no going back. Which means that those poor souls who updated their devices without reading to the end of the article (or checking the date, or the disclaimer, or the article URL, or clicking the download link) are stuck waiting for the real iOS 5.1 jailbreak. Unfortunately for them, as we reported last week, they may have several weeks to wait.

As you might expect, those who upgraded (and those who want to make fun of them) took to the post’s comments. Here are a few gems.

At least two people went ahead and upgraded to iOS 5.1:

Some got the joke but weren’t amused:

A few decided to play along:

While others point out that the clues were obvious:

What do you think? Was this a good joke or just too mean? Let us know in the comments.

I thought this was great. Too bad people don’t have more of a sense of humor.

If you were stupid enough to fall for this and upgrade…..good for you….or actually, do the world a favour and find a tall building and jump off!

At first I was excited that the jailbreak was finally here, but then AprilRa1n catch me a little fishy. Eitherway since my iPad 2’s already on 5.1. Clicked the download button to see where it led I was completely disappointed and I had no clue to laugh or be angry at the well taken steps for a perfect April Fools. But yes, it was a little cruel to those who upgraded their devices to 5.1 for this sake.

Hopefully they make up to this and put a rush to releasing the jailbreak :)

first of all! jailbreaking is a risky business, so it would be completely stupid to not read before proceeding! aprilRa1n?! seriously?! it proves a fact to me though, stupidity is contagious! to those who are illiterate, hope you saved your SHSH blobs! smh

Some of you are being complete efftards about this!

Ok ok so you are a technology genius…we get you, you are smarter than Steve Jobs himself…great, but do you really have to act like a pretentious d-bag at the expense of others?

Some people are newer to the softmod/tweaking/jailbreaking world, and some a bit more seasoned, does that give anyone here the right to hate on others? I think not!

Tell ya what haters, go back to slappin your noodles and pretending you have girlfriends (or a life) while still living off your parents, and pretending you have a better grasp on reality because you know more about technology than some others…
because at the end of the day, those who know, do…and those who do not, well they act like asswipes on the internet!

What everyone really needs to do is relax. Yes, you updated to 5.1, now you don’t have the jailbreak. Oh my gosh, end of the world. Jesus people, stop whining. It’s just a third party software, its not like there’s anything new on the jailbreak anyway. I got my new iPhone a few weeks ago and it was updated to ios 5.1. Instead of crying, I’m just having some patience. This team is working extremely hard to provide to you FREE third party software. If you’re going to get pissed because they make a joke, and you were too giddy to even read their whole article, then you don’t deserve it anyway.

Wouldn’t you be able to go back to your last iOS if you backup from your icloud ?

Your iCloud backup doesn’t include the operating system. It’s just your basic data – contacts, calendar, which songs to sync, app data, and that sort of thing. It’s not a complete backup of your phone. When you restore from backup iTunes installs the operating system fresh and then applies the backup data.
