Instagram Update Improves Camera, Adds New Filter
[ Technology]

Instagram has just launched an update to its iOS app that they say is the “largest upgrade to our Instagram iOS camera since it was revamped just over one year ago.” Don’t feel left out, Android users – you get plenty of other cool updates including a new filter.

First, the iOS camera. Instagram has made some significant changes in both the look and performance, along with giving users the option to attach a grid to their live photos screen. Here are the camera updates according to Instagram:

Instagram-themed shutter & shutter release button; A preview of the most recent photo on your camera roll; Improved Camera Roll image selector (iPhone 5 only) for quick access to your last photograph; Optional grid guide for live photos and a permanent grid guide for the scale & crop screen; Speed and reliability improvements.

Another significant update to the app is a vastly improved tilt-shift.

“In the past, there had been vast differences in the effective strength of the blur between the preview screen and the output in your feed and camera roll. With this update the blur you see is now the blur you’ll get! We’ve also completely overhauled the blur algorithm to increase quality and accuracy. Tilt-shift now gives a vastly more realistic rendering of depth of field because of these improvements and subtle tweaks to how we render the image,” they say in a blog post.

Users can expect to see a new news feed that include larger images, as well as infinite scroll ability on users’ profiles. Your filtered photos now automatically save in a separate iOS folder so that you don’t have to mix your unfiltered iOS camera shots with your pretty filtered photos. Instagram has also added a Foursquare button to location pages that provides more detail about venues.

Finally, both iOS and Android users can rejoice over a brand new filter. It’s called “Willow” and Instagram describes it as “a monochrome filter with subtle purple tones and a translucent glowing white border.”
