Since Google+ introduced their new interface updates many users have been annoyed or turned off by the ever present white space to the right of the activity stream. The #usesforwhitespace meme hashtag has gone viral on Google+ and created a good amount of buzz around #newgoogleplus and #whitespace as well. People have gone wild speculating what to do with this unused space.

So far Google hasn’t explained exactly what they are planning use the space for, but they do plan on using it. If you were worried about them using it for advertising, Vic Gundotra, Senior Vice President of Social at Google, confirmed the space will not be used for ads.

There’s a lot more to the new Google+ than just white space. So far changes include moving the navigation buttons from the top of the page to the left side, enabling drag and drop the icons that link to their Profile, Photos, Hangouts, Circles and Games, new conversation “cards”, Hangouts, and a discovery page for finding trending topics on Goggle+.

Despite all these changes, users still seem to be focused more on speculating uses for the white space. If you’re interested in learning more about what users are doing with the white space, or simply are intent on eliminating the unused area, just type the #usesforwhitespace hashtag in your search and you’ll find volumes of information.
