Bob Parsons Brings Elephant Into the Conversation Yet Again

Every time we think GoDaddy has tried to put to rest the controversy over CEO Bob Parsons killing an elephant, Parsons brings it back up. This time he has tweeted a link to a a cover story for NRA digital magazine America’s 1st Freedom, which reports in line with Parsons’ own defense for his actions.

Do you think Parsons was right or wrong to kill the elephant? Comment here.

Clearly there are people standing up for both sides of the argument. PETA has been the most vocal opponent, and much of the piece is for all intents and purposes attacking that organization. It’s not just animal rights activists that were outraged by the elephant killing, however. Many people claimed they were pulling their sites from GoDaddy domains, and some of GoDaddy’s competitors took advantage of this by offering special deals (with donations to elephant-related causes) for switching to their respective services.

Parsons has staunchly defended his actions from the beginning, in the press, on Twitter, and even in unrelated GoDaddy press releases (which were about donations to Hope for Haiti), though interestingly enough, GoDaddy never put out much in the way of damage control following the outcry over the video – no press releases directly about the incident, though the video was later heavily edited to give it a completely different tone. More on Parsons’ defense here, and in the NRA article.

The video has even drawn parody on YouTube:

Regardless of where you stand on Parsons’ elephant-killing ways, it seems clear that the whole thing has done little to help GoDaddy in terms of PR, which is why I find it fascinating that Parsons keeps bringing it back up, rather than letting the story disappear into the past. It seemed like they were finally focusing their PR on charitable donations, but Parsons recently tweeted the following, bringing the elephant back into spotlight:

Nice to see someone telling it like it is. I’m on front cover of NRA magazine. Love the NRA! http://x.co/XSHo 5 days ago via web · powered by @socialditto

WARNING: GRAPHIC ELEPHANT BUTCHER IMAGES BELOW

It gets more interesting, when you look at the actual article and find a different video with more footage from the elephant outing. There’s no AC/DC soundtrack in this one like there was in the other one before it was edited, though I have to wonder if this one has been edited as well. Before editing, the other one also showed many villagers wearing GoDaddy hats. This seems to be lacking in this video as well. It’s not embeddable (if you have a link to embeddable version, let us know, but you can see the video in its entirety in the article here), but here are a few screenshots. Please note that all captions are from the actual video. We did not add these.

Since tweeting the link to the story, Parsons also tweeted a link to a new GoDaddy video where he talks about how to make good decisions.

Is Parsons helping or hurting GoDaddy’s image by continuing to bring up the elephant? Tell us what you think.

i think we’ll find Bob’s claim 2 record spending on special interest groups spills over 2 the gun lobby

i heard they got a practice Target Jewish Elephant @ Scottsdale Gun Club specially 4 Bob

Anyone who saw the original knows it was a main stream publicity kill. Sorry NRA, i can’t read 1st Freedom unless it’s in paper & ink print edition. LUV the NRA though

Perhaps Rupert Murdoch can get 2 the bottom of this, although, unless RM takes business advce from GoDaddy

I don`t get whats up with Facebook owner and GoDaddy CEO killing animals, and publishing it for the crowd, do it quietly like the rest of us.

By the way, who eats elephants thats just weird.

  • S.O

Bob, you are Da Man! Thank you for feeding fellow human beings and ignore all criticism from silly armchair Nancies with a steak on the BBQ! Please keep the rampage. God loves you and has a place for you in heaven.

    Smirnoff!

I’m not an animal rights activist but I think the way Parsons is handling this is incredibly thick headed. The internet is littered with thousands of people hating on the company even before this issue took place (because of bad service etc). All he is really doing is giving customers more reasons to talk bad about it. I guess he figures there are enough people who support him or don’t care either way who will continue to make purchases from his company. Unfortunately, it seems he may be right.

  • Roger Uriarte

Unfortunately Bob, this is 2011. Not 1941. I had 90 domains hosted with you, but since you think you can just go and kill intelligent animals for sport I have been moving my domains to another registrar. There are only 20 left currently. They will be gone soon. Sorry Bob. You don’t fit into my idea of a good company to do business with

I guess that “bad publicity is good publicity” for Go Daddy. But does Parsons really know his audience? Most people who purchase web hosting aren’t right-wingers sitting on a couch watching NASCAR. Rather we are from a huge Web Dev community who purchase multiple hosting accounts through-out the year for our clients. And this kind arrogance just leaves a nasty taste in our mouths.

Thanks for putting that final nail in the coffin Bob.

Boob parsons is one of the best examples of ignorant arrogance that I’ve ever seen.

Really, probably one of the most stupid people I’ve ever seen.

This has always been evident by simply going to the seizure causing homepage of gd and how he splatters himself all over it.

Agreed, Arwen, g0d@ddy is the absolute worst domain service ever, which is why I switched to name.com 3 years ago… then for him to show his true assdom like this — all in the name of publicity — is nauseating.

Giving to charities? What a joke. Just more publicity.

I’m not an “animal activist” either, although I do care about them deeply, as they are one of the most important components to planet earth’s delicate balance and one of mother natures creatures, just like humans are and I don’t kill and/or eat them (blood=violence=yuck), but I was so happy to see tens of thousands of people transfer their domains elsewhere after this disgusting egomaniac murdered a female elephant, ripping her from the family that she would’ve spent her entire life with.

Elephants were there first, humans are the problem.

Then to totally dishonor her by putting his filthy foot on her, standing on her like some conquerer. Pu$$y with a gun. Too bad he didn’t take her on in hand-to-hand combat, armed in the same way she was. That would make it a bit easier to take and then maybe someone could call him a true bada$$.

Only a complete moron would wish to resurrect this story.

Either that or he’s sooooo desperate for attention, he simply can’t control himself.

No one has ever accused boob of being smart though, eh?

    • http://www.delishibusiness.com Arwen Taylor

I agree RJ. I think he is double down on this in an attempt to capitalize on the controversy.

  • Rex Summerfield

Unlike many of the radical frothing mouthed people on here slamming Bob Parsons I have actually been to Africa. Elephants are NOT endangered in many areas. In fact places like Kruger National Park and the surrounding countryside is grossly over populated with elephants. They are destroying not only their own habitat but that of countless other animals. Hunting them is an econimic boost to the local economy and a source of much need food for the locals. Kudo’s to Bob for not bowing to uninformed idiots who are dropping their domains from GoDaddy because of what some animal rights group says. You are all sheeple…. following the crowd without a clue.

Hear hear, another self-proclaimed expert making a fool of himself, calling names – just because he bought a ticket – just like Parson did.
KNP is sometimes overpopulated, yes – migrating herds end up in populated areas – perhaps because those areas are only recently inhabited – so, people taking over the savanah – or, providing easy food in the form of crops. Which makes it necessary to cull them – not just one, but the complete herd, as killing only a few completely destroys the family-structure – aggravating the problem because of rogue animals. So, no matter how heartbreaking, they get culled in a controlled way – and canned, to be sold locally. But that is in South Africa only – in the rest of Africa it is less or not organised – and the total number of elephants is dwindling – yet, it is impossible to relocate them from here to other areas – if only because of poaching…
Also, lodges do offer game for hunt: $10k for an elephant etc. For the rich and braindead; they can get their trophy-shots. Again, mainly in South Africa. I really doubt if Zimbabwe (where Parson went) has any game-conservancy going on – so it doesn’t seem like a controlled kill – but a random one, which can not be justified by him because of ‘conservancy’: he is not the unbiased expert.
Hunting buffalo and beavers was an economic boost in the Wild West as well – they are almost wiped out now. Also, had you educated yourself, income in Zimbabwe hardly ever reaches the ‘people’….
And just for your information: I live one hour from KNP. Does that make me the expert? Not really. So, not living or being there makes one informed – there are other means for that – one of them being some invention called the internet.

Uh, no. I dropped my account with GoDaddy because hackers were stealing people’s domain names using a loophole in their non-existent customer service. GoDaddy was not interested in helping their customers recover their domain names from thieves that were able to exploit a weakness in their system nor has that exploit been patched. People are still losing their domain names today and it’s been about 3-4 years since I switched to another registrar.

GoDaddy is a bad registrar with poor customer service. Additionally, as Joyce points out Bob Parsons has always been the “bad publicity is good publicity” type of person beginning with his tasteless Superbowl commercials. Personally, I think he is just trying to keep himself and his business in the public eye by doubling down on this nonsense.

He wants to hunt elephants. Fine. That’s his choice. However, just because he is free to do so does not mean we are not allowed to criticize him for his actions. This expectation that he, and you apparently, has of being free from criticism for what he has done is the epitome of cluelessness.

    • http://www.planxdesign.eu Jan Pozivil

That is not the point. The question is: “Is Parsons helping or hurting GoDaddy’s image by continuing to bring up the elephant?” The answer imho is “yes”.

  • http://www.snerdey.com Snerdey

How is killing elephants related to hosting or domain names? Why would he bring it up again? Easy… more free press coverage, free advertising. I wonder if Bob ate some of that elephant?

I read all the responses and all I’ve got to say is that Americans are just spoiled brats. For God’s sake, leave Godaddy and the darn elephants alone. This is a non-issue in the rest of the world. You are worrying about nothing and the rest of the world is laughing at you. There are kids, women, people dying of hunger in mass everyday in the Third World and what are you worried about? What’s wrong with you people? Like the Chinese say, “Americans, empty skull, McDonalds and KFC inside”. Please guys, stop this non-sense! Yes, I’m American. :-)

    • snt

First of all, you are one of those dumb american who have no clue about the rest of the world. You are another Sara Palin and people like you and are a shame for America. People die of hunger not only in the third world countries, but in America too. May be you don’t look around.

  • snt

What about someone shooting this moron for fun? I will transfer 8 domains I have with godaddy to another registrar.

  • http://www.thebridgetonowhere.org Dan Williams

Sorry Bob, this video was disgusting. I’m sure the locals there could have taken care of the problem, IF there really was one, by themselves. They didn’t need you to do it, self-EGO? Our company received complaints from some of our clients concerning your video. These clients are also yours through our company. They did not appreciate domain and hosting association with GoDaddy, and have made reference to possibly changing providers. In all due respect, I have read some of the post, pro and con, on your web site. Bob, after experiencing the tone of the remarks one might think they were paid supporters.

  • http://mightyfleissradio.wordpress.com Glen Naughty

The casket was beautiful, Copper, 22 Guage, Open. A cascade of Lillies, Flowers & photographs placed with meaningful fashion on the rise. One final salute, one final semper-fi. Bob clutches his Blunderbus, even on the far side.

    Tears rolls on my cheek

  • Steve

Bob Parsons is an idiot who uses this bullsh*t “humanitarian” excuse to murder elephants. Mr. Parsons wants you to believe that these villages are not capable of killing these elephants, so he comes in saves the day. What a clown! This is what happens when an arrogant person has too much money than he can handle.

  • http://www.planxdesign.eu Jan Pozivil

Really, it’s quite simple – killing anyone, a human or an animal can’t be good PR.

  • G

Bob Parsons is rich but that doesn’t mean he’s not a fool… a cruel fool.

  • http://www.21steps2perfectphotos.com Wayne

Come on you uneducated Americans. Learn about the rest of the world especially Africa and my country South Africa. We have major problems with game management and especially elephants. It’s terrible to have to kill but they create havoc when they escape the game reserves. They are so well protected in the reserves that they are destroying their own habitat. What should we do? Let them loose in the cities? If some rich American or European doesn’t come and cull the excess and the rogues then a ranger does it. The only difference is the valuable foreign exchange is used to save the rest of the elephants and the communities around the reserves.

Do some research and learn about the problems of a country very different to yours. This is an African problem with African solutions. We are not dumb and and are doing a pretty good job of preserving our wildlife.

    • Jostyn

this was not RSA it was Zim – the money he paid went straight into Mugabe’s pocket not one cent helped his citizens that he has starved
Both countries including most other African and other countries that have big game left are rife with poachers – now if Parsons went out to cull them that would be a step forward. He won’t because the poachers shoot back and he’s only man enough to take potshots at something that can’t

  • Toubab

Bob Parsons appears to be a nutcase and definitely in need of treatment .. sadly however, contributing to his ‘weird behaviour’ are the people that give his asinine videos such wide media coverage.

Bad publicity works as well as good publicity ( sometimes better ) all is publicity. So perhaps he is a tasteless but clever publicist !

I wouldn’t go anywhere near his Go Daddy enterprise, but with such crass videos and press coverage, he will be getting more readership for his products.

  • Jeff

I have had good experience so far with GoDaddy. Tech issue solved etc. Nevertheless, this is a game changer for me. I currently have two domains registered and a hosting account. Small potatoes, I know. But I’m going to take it elsewhere.

In a world with diminishing options for wildlife, where habitat is shrinking for these big beautiful creatures, what we do matters. How we comport ourselves may even have consequences in the business world.

  • Jostyn

I’ve moved my domains – just have 2 left that are expiring.
This was not a “rogue” it was an elephant that got pushed to the edge of starvation and ate whatever it could find which is generally what they do anyway. The humans’ corn was just more food.
I’ve spent time working on farms in southern Africa so have an idea of this common problem that can be fixed without killing.
Parsons is just a neanderthal and I’m very disappointed that Danica Patrick continues her association with this gun toting nutball.
I know she’s with him for money but look around Danica, wake up and stop being used by this idiot to add sex to his misogynistic lifestyle
