Facebook is acquiring ProtoGeo Oy, makers of the Moves app.

The story was reported earlier by the Wall Street Journal, and the Moves blog announces that the company is joining Facebook.

“Since we launched Moves, we’ve been focused on running a simple and clean activity diary that millions of people have enjoyed using,” the announcement says. “Now, we’re joining Facebook’s talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people.”

“For those of you that use the Moves app – the Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app, and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook,” it adds.

That will be good news for current users, and for those concerned about how Facebook treats user data.

If you’re unfamiliar with Moves, it’s an exercise-tracking app for iOS and Android. Why does Facebook want this? Probably for talent, and perhaps data, but who knows? They’re doing a lot of interesting things these days. Let’s not forget that they’re also acquiring virtual reality company Oculus. They just got FTC approval on that one, by the way.

It’s unclear how much Facebook is paying for ProtoGeo Oy.
