CNN President “Really Afraid Of” Social Networks

Argues Facebook, Twitter can "pull people away from us"

[ Social Media]

Over the years, there have been more than a few arguments about whether online news sites are killing newspapers.  Now, due to some almost startling comments made by the president of CNN, it looks like the next round of old media-new media disputes might concern social networks and cable news organizations.

According to the AFP, Jonathan Klein’s remarks on this subject were in no way ambiguous.  He said at Bloomberg BusinessWeek’s 2010 Media Summit New York, "The competition I’m really afraid of are social networking sites.  That’s an alternative that threatens to pull people away from us."

Klein then explained, "The people you’re friends with on Facebook or the people you follow on Twitter are trusted sources of information. . . .  Well, we want to be the most trusted name in news.  We don’t want the 1,000 people you follow in Twitter to be the most trusted sources for you. . . .  So I’m far more worried about the 500 million people on Facebook than I am about two million people watching Fox."

That’s an interesting take on the power of social networks.  It implies – at the very least – that CNN anchors are going to spend a whole lot more time referencing Facebook and Twitter from now on.  An ad campaign and new apps could follow, too.

On a broader scale, Klein seems to be saying that social networks’ users can easily – even unwittingly – make or break major corporations.

Good, we need this to happen, CNN and other companies have been lying to the public for years. Now its time for the truth. Looking forward to seeing this.

I cannot wait for the lying proganda filled zionist media to go down.

With CNN deciding to be on Twitter and Facebook clearly shows the impact of the social media.

In no way we can take this medium lightly or ignore it. There are already so many TV hosts and journalists mailny on Twitter and they keep on tweeting the headlines and gain instant feedback from the online public.

Infact I come to know about so many News based TV programmes to be aired as a result of these tweets.

If Twitter is becoming the main source of information then choosing whom you follow is of crucial importance.

If people really trust their facebook aquaintance Joe Bob who read someone’s crazy blog and doesn’t even add a link to it when they post on facebook, than we’re in for much much much more trouble and inaccurate information than any supposed misinformation from the cables.

If I were to believe Joe Bob, Obama had all that teleprompter equipment setup for schoolchildren AND he wasn’t born in the U.S.

By the way, I trust CNN WAY more than MSNBC and FOX.

Hey, scoop some of that jello you call brains into a bowl for me. Oh wait, never mind, you probably used the Kool-aid in the mix instead of water.

Anderson Cooper’s show is called 360 because that is what you get when you chase your tail.

Then there is the All Bias All Bull show.

I don’t have time to detail it all, but anyone with a pea in their head, especially someone who actually compares news stories to actual video footage of a speech, would have a clue that CNN is propaganda at it’s finest.

CNN shouldn’t be afraid they should be trying to figure out a way of embracing this social scene and using it to their advantage

  • Jack E. Chan

According to the latest polls, few are even watching CNN anymore. This is a pathetic attempt to point the finger at social networks as the culprit, when in fact it’s CNN’s polical biases that have driven people to Fox News by the millions.

  • Daniel

Then why he does not call his friends from the “Bilderberg Group” and tell them to buy all the social networks or to silently shut them down, like they always did with the true information sources. I tell you what: “if God does not exist we are REALLY lost”

If Big Media did their job and had the public’s trust, they wouldn’t have a thing to worry about.

Instead they allow video Press Releases to be used as “news”, allow the Pentagon Pundits to sell us a War that made companies like Haliburton wealthy beyond belief, and keep insisting that celebrity wardrobe malfunctions and questionable celebrity maternity is news, while widespread corruption and non-enforcement of regulation goes unreported.

This guy should stop whining and start doing his job, though I doubt highly that the American Public will ever trust Big Media again.

  • http://www.lasvegasacts.com Manof1002voices

It’s their own fault. We are not so stupid to know truth. Oh, there’s still a few who are that watch it still.
The unbelievable bias vile that spews from the so-called ‘News Network’ is a travesty to journalism.
Not to mention NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNBC. I think they are all hoping to become the ‘Government Channel’ when Obummer takes over the rest of the country.

Call your congressmen! NO on Healthcare takeover of America. There’s still time to try something that doesn’t cost America it’s freedom AND bankrupt us Further. Don’t believe the fuzzy made up math based on assumptions. 1 week left!!

For a long time media kept the secret, Twisted fact, represented distorted fact and made viewer fool. People want to interact and respond when they don’t agree on face book. On Facebook everyone is on level playing field compare to TV where host has been god. Fellows here we go. You are no longer the elite few who control the news. If the news reporters are not playing fair, don’t blame some one else for loosing their job.

  • http://arcadedigital.com/ John Sostak

Jonathan Klein and CNN are wise to be concerned, unlike Rupert Murdoch, playing ostrich with his head in the sand. Murdoch is defiantly trying to charge Google and visitors for access to his online content.

I realize how expensive it is to produce real content and reporting, and the Internet revenue model cannot support news like 60 minutes, the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal. Therein lies the problem.

I will not trust my Facebook friends to report on Haiti, or fuel prices, so we need real media. My LinkedIn colleagues on the other hand…

  • http://Lillicotch.com Jim L

I believe that the news companies, like the recording and movie industries, have done this to themselves. They insist on sticking with their tired old business models and their customers are fed up with having it shoved down their throats.

The Internet is a communication medium, not some new broadcast platform. Until they learn to be part of the conversation instead of trying to shout down their readers they will never have “fans” who will work for them for free.

I do agree it will take some innovative thinking to make more money with this model, but distribution costs go down to almost $0 as well. The fact is they must adapt or die and pay walls will only speed things up.

  • gee

I look at this report and laugh. After all, all media organisations like this have brought it upon themselves. It is time for change and the masses are having their say…at last, and good riddens to rotten organisations who don’t particularly care about the news and truth, they’re just working in their own best interests. Somewhere along the road them became corrupted and now judgement is upon them.

On Facebook you don’t need thousand persons to be dead to make a big CNN news. Facebook are personal news and a great tool to find friends from the past and present.
CNN news are controled by US government.
CNN mix politics with News. On Facebook you have a freedom of speach.
Facebook does not use human misery and shocking informations to get better rating, as CNN does.
Twitter is personal short opinion, with freedom of speach.
Facebook or twitter, does not interfere with the politics of other countries.
Facebook or Twitter does not send US soldiers to War.

I am a dedicated social media user and I enjoy discussing the news on these sites. What has alarmed me about cable news is that they seem to be diverging from news and dealing more with comment. So when they show the Twitter stream of folks I don’t know commenting on the news how is that really news and how is it valuable?

Perhaps people are simply tired of all the negativity and fear pushing in traditional media….Attempt to find ANY good news in any traditional media form. People are waking up and making conscious choices – we do not have to accept what we are “fed” – there are other reliable sources, and there is lot’s of empowering, great news to share…. Here is a perfect example – instead of replaying over and over and over the beating of a handicapped person in Sydney, and promoting the drama – why not show what is being done out there to support handicapped people? Here is a great example:

“Unbeaten”-our newest documentary, has been chosen for a special
premiere at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the main hospital for US
Military returning from the theatre of war. In attendance will be over
580 Wounded Warriors, hospital staff, patients, guests and special
attendees. The Unbeaten spirit is… spreading across the planet like wildfire! The beautiful thing is, it is not just for people in a wheelchair – it is inspiration for EVERYONE – Have YOU seen it? Here is a link to a trailer:

This movie will be a classic in the healing arena – along the
inspirational lines of Christopher Reeves. Hope for all new paraplegic
    cases.
    http://www.polarismediagroup.com/debbieruston/en/#/unbeaten/

This movie truly inspires me everyday, to push through challenges and do what I am capable of!

GOOD news is out there in abundance, if journalist are willing to look for it. This world will not be changed with bad news….but it can be changed with more good news.

Perhaps people are simply learning they have a choice….they can be bombarded by what the media is feeding them, or they can tap into positive sources and choose what they fill their minds with.

CNN, CBS, NBC, ABC & the newspapers are so full of garbage. Not only to they spread lies of the administration they favor – they also ignore reporting fraud, corruption, and what people really need to know to make their lives better.

I used to love reading the newspaper – but their is absolutely NOTHING worth reading in any of them. The columnists they have are worthless, and it’s all opinion based not real reporting of anything important.

Both newspapers and television want to blame the internet for their downfall – they need to take a good long look in the mirror.

    • http://www.sitebyjames.com James

That is complete and utter bull… I’m sorry… Newspapers and Broadacst media DO report what is considered sensasonalist and more importantly the local news stations report on what’s happening close to the community.

FACE IT… Nobody really wants the news, they want Jerry Springer and they want Global News catastrophy… nothing that would aim their attention to their own community.

Local news stations have a hard enough time surviving let alone coming up with news fabrications to control your mind and keep you from the real truth.

I continue to read local news on hard copy and I continue to read it on the internet.

I don’t think anybody is concerned with losing their business to the internet. I think the major media outlets are simply concerned with the quality of the news in general… (we can leave fox out of it)

      Support your local media stations… without them… you don’t have a community… jmo…

If CNN and the other news organizations really did their jobs well, there would be no threat at all from social media. The threat to the news media organizations happened all because they were not doing a good job. Facebook and Twitter filled the void—whether for the good or bad.

The one thing that bothers me the most about CNN is their effort to use their own polling and tweets to make the news—as if that is the news they should be focused on. Polls are great, but when I constantly hear CNN newscasters beg for people to voice their opinions and then go on and on about this as if it is THE news, this takes time out from their reporting REAL news. I don’t always need to know what others think on a subject. I need to know facts to make up my own mind. CNN just gives us tidbits of almost any subject and nothing in-depth. It is especially offensive to me when the newscasters insert their personal opinions into what is being reported. The constant barrage of commentators who take sides, but with no real conversation between the parties is like listening to the couple next to your table in a restaurant argue over whether they should order their steak rare or medium rare. It may tell me a little about them as a couple, but it affects me not one tiny bit in my world. So much of CNN news is like this. Cnn has become a commentary channel and not a news channel.

  • John Lowery

Yea, down with CNN. The only news you can trust is what you read on Facebook and Twitter. Nobody lies to you on the Web. Journalists all have a secret plot to confuse us for their own gain.

It is about time that people get the real facts on news stories not what CNN decides to report due to its advertising revenue the news is slanted to favor their “advertisers”. We notice the news on drugs, insurance company’s and political parties are biased and full of bull. CNN and the major TV networks and newspapers run by large corporate interests have been misrepresenting the facts, misinforming the public and basically supporting their sponsors. For instance the media hype on the H1N1 Vaccine was constantly reported from March 2009 to this day -supporting an untested vaccine which is dangerously harmful to pregnant woman, older adults, babies, children, and adults. Young people should be aware of the consequences of trusting that this vaccine will be safe. Yet CNN did not report that the main drug maker was accused in Europe of releasing a deadly form of the avian flu virus. You did not hear this on CNN or the major TV networks. It is time that people get the real truth and protect themselves from CNN which interprets the news story to its own financial benefit.

All news broadcasters are biased and subjective. It’s impossible to be otherwise. Besides that, objective truth doesn’t sell.
CNN lost their last chance of survival with the resignation of Dobbs and Beck.

I think CNN and the other Media Corps. are late for any real change, they have shown to us that they really missed the boat when talking about the Internet and it ability to empower the user.

I hope that soon new and viable and overall trusted sources of information could appear in the horizon, actually Twitter or Facebook are not the best way to stay updated on news and events around the globe, I guess I’m sharing the key here to them?

Social Media is the equivalent to rumors. Nothing more. They are unprofessional journalists, in many cases they are underqualified educators, and at best, they know just about as much about a topic they claim authority on as the gy working the counter at the conveniece store…

…embrace social media, not be fearful of it. The most recent disasters clearly illustrate that CNN couldn’t cover the story on it’s own. I thought it was smart for them to create an information protal where anyone could share images and news in the remore areas that CNN was unable to reach. If CNN doesn’t learn how to work in partnership with all of the opportunities that social media provides, then yes, they should be fearful of it.

When someone has 50-100, or even more, ‘friends’ on Facebook…he or she will probably know tops 5 people ‘for real’ and the rest is just ‘Facebook-rubbish’.

So after reading this I only wondered how long it will take for me to distrust my ‘Facebook-friends’ and ‘the news they bring’. Like I distrust the news CNN gives us I mean.

It is strange to think I would blindly trust all these people on Facebook (or LinkedIn, or Twitter etc. etc.), who the hack are they anyway?

Maybe they are employees of Mr. Klein? Or worse…

Funny that CNN is trying to blame new social sites for their ever diminishing number of viewers, as opposed to the obvious, Content. Content, content, content.

Is Fox losing viewers to Twitter? Don’t know, but as CNN goes down Fox goes up.

I’m surprised that CNN hasn’t blamed the snow storms, or global warming for their loss of viewers.

What makes free flow of information on the web, specially with social media, is that old-school news media cannot dominate the news and filtrate it the way it likes. It will come through several sources and people can compare and discover what the realities are.

Yes, they must have felt the threat, but CNN has been wise using social media as one of their source of news in some cases. This is appreciable.

  • http://TundraBlue.com Web Design

When CNN distorts a story or tells only half in order to manipulate what you or I think that’s disinformation. When your buddy tells you something that s/he saw, but didn’t research (s/he has a job that prevents it), that’s misinformation.

I don’t know what’s worse, knowing the media is probably lying or questioning whether a friend misunderstood a situation.

Foolish business move, nomatter how you look at it.

All social networks do is enable the spread of incorrect news.

Somebody puts a story out there that isn’t true, they haven’t gathered all the facts, done any of the investigating reporting that reputable publications do, none of that. In fact, it’s not their story. They’re just being a parrot. So any scammer who’s got what looks like a legit story has an easier time throwing it out there and getting many to parrot it all the way to the public. I’ve been emailed many times with what looks like press releases and are nothing but scams. They even tell you they’re going to break the news to major publications soon, and are giving the smaller guys the opportunity to publish first. Gee, didn’t see that one coming.

Social networks are like TMZ reporting. Full of speculation, misrepresentation, and taken a lot of times out of context of another site reporting the news, who is just reporting the news from yet another source down the line, and so on.

I think the major publications should use the social networks to their advantage instead of fearing them. 500 million FaceBook users and yet CNN fears them? I’d see them as each a potential reader of CNN if you could get them all to friend CNN. I would think that CNN is smarter than that and see opportunity rather than disaster.

    • http://nosyspot.blogspot.com Excuse Me Excuse Me

Of course, the claim that all social media does is “spread incorrect news” is in itself incorrect.

Now even if a lot of news by social media WAS incorrect, so what? It only sharpens the discerning ability of the readers.

More and more readers are seeing through the CNN “correct reporting” for what it is, a propaganda for certain people in power and their interests.

I’ll take people’s reporting, even if “incorrect”, over propaganda any day.

      Cheers

      • http://www.queensokay.com Adsense Publisher

Incorrect reporting is what we’re trying to stop.
You can post real factual news and it’s still nothing more than propaganda.
Some people might disagree, but take one topic and report only on that topic and tell me you aren’t nothing more than a propaganda machine for your one topic. It can even be broad or small. Like take Republican’s as a topic and bash them 24/7, and you’re a Democratic propaganda machine.

Elected officials do it all the time.
Businesses do it all the time.

If somebody reported they knew a company was going to report bad earnings and thought it was his duty to get this information to the public so everybody can sell their stock now, and you bought into this and you found out the earnings report later said they were doing better than expected and the price skyrocketed, wouldn’t you be upset that you were so happy to get the news from some idiot and sell your stock rather than a real stock analyst at the New York Times who would have told you to hold until the earnings report came out because he’s done research that contradicts the investigated story the average Joe didn’t do, but you believed a person rather than a reputable source?

This is a good thing, recognizing and respecting competition in any form, not just old style competition between equivalent competitors of the similar technologies.

This shows respect for new technologies, considers them legitimate, and admits that the oldsters do not need “government protection” from the newbies to stay alive.

They are admitting that they are responsible for their own survival in the face of new forms of competition, and that’s a difficult thing for any company to admit.

Bill Gates of Microsoft couldn’t do it, so they pursued felonious monopoly practices instead of facing competition fairly.

Currently, the Telcos and IPSs and bogus non-productive patent holders are looking for government sponsored preferential protections against modern competition.

Good for CNN to blame themselves if they sink or swim, and not ask for a bail-out or protection.

Now, about the loonies who responded here with their neoNazi nations fantasy, and those expressing antisocial irresponsibility … well, we have to filter what we read no matter where it comes.

Of course nobody should believe something with or without links just because it’s written or broadcast, but fools will sprout wherever there’s fertilizer.

    La-di-da, la-di-da.

Substance is eternal…facebook and twitter will never have the substance factor. What it will have is shameless sad product plugs to match every twitter ‘update’ and any site that has a DAILY link to ‘meet a millionaire online’ I can’t take seriously because it’s a SOCIAL site…anyone ever heard anyone use ‘social and substance’ in a sentence? No…? That’s because it’s impossible to without sounding ridiculous and something else more fun and exciting will come along that everyone will fantasize about filling shoes as big as CNN. (Cue the Myspace story…)

In reading half these posts I realized how distant from reality people are. Why…is everyone…defending social sites while making journalists sound evil…uh really? You know what a real journalist…really does? Let me sum it up for you…social sites=for your personal life/real news channels=for the only news that actually matters.

As a gen’xer most people assume I am obsessed with facebook and probably follow E! News and MTV on twitter-but that’s the farthest thing from true-I’m over it. Everything gets old and there will be another ‘face-place’ or ‘litter’ in two years. CNN will always have what counts and those who simply know better will support it.

      Party on CNN*!

As the two comments above indicate, there is a certain amount of mistrust of the mainstream media by many people. The real issue here is the decentralization of information distribution which has been happening since the internet began and will continue to happen. The power of the mainstream media will continue to devolve and people will continue to get their information from an increasing number of sources, social media being just one category.
