House Majority Leader Eric Cantor announced a new initiative today that looks to improve the communication and understanding between Facebook’s legion of users and the legislative branch of the United States government. The new Facebook app, Citizen Cosponsor, allows Facebook users to easily access information pertaining to congressional bills, see which member(s) of Congress sponsored the bill, where the bill is in the legislative process, and then see who among Facebook is a “cosponsor.”

Despite what the name seems to imply, Facebook users aren’t literally cosponsoring the bills in the same way that members of Congress sponsor a bill (and thank heavens for that). It’s more of a way to see what kind of bills get support from the public while allowing the public supporters to share with their Facebook friends what bills they support. Users of the app can see what bills are currently being discussed by visiting the Majority Leader’s website and browsing through the list.

Built upon Facebook’s Open Graph, Citizen Cosponsor, which was first picked up by All Facebook, is an inventive way for Congress to invite the public to be closer to the legislative process. Additionally, if you want to follow updates on a specific bill, you can click “Keep Me Informed” and you will receive updates regarding the bill’s activity in the House.

Leader Cantor said the following via statement:

“We are dedicated to modernizing the way Congress connects with the American people. Citizen Cosponsor breaks ground by directly connecting people with the work the House is doing every day. With the simple click of a button, Citizen Cosponsors will become a part of the deliberative process, using the same social networks they already rely on in their everyday lives.

“Effectively communicating with the people we represent is a fundamental responsibility of what we do as elected officials. Since I came to Congress, I have made it my priority to open the channels of communication between constituents and their Members of Congress. I am proud of the continued progress the House Republican Majority has made toward increasing transparency, visibility and participation in the legislative process.”

Additionally, Leader Cantor provided the following video statement announcing Citizen Cosponsors.

My 35 yr old son lost his business, his marriage, his daughter, and ultimately his life as a result of government regulations and small business taxes.

Maybe someone can have influence with Congress besides the Unions who have run business, especially manufacturing, out of the country. The Unions have enough power to silence the dialogue in the US as to why Manufacturing has gone off shore. Rather, you hear comments from Piers Morgan,CNN, that Apple Computer should just cut their profits and hire more US workers. The stockholders who have ridden the risk with Apple have no support for this nonsense, and Apple has now announced a dividend for those who shared the risk with skin in the game. I hope organized labor does not use this forum to bully the rest of the people participating, but I anticipate since they have the bully channels that they will push out their message even though they are only about 15% of workers. It is crazy that this small percent of workers are breaking the back of all big cities, while the huge majority of citizens must retire on their savings and 401k, not our tax dollar contributions.

    • Tony Mitchell

Get off the Republican talking point it’s all the unions fault. Many public employees don’t belong to unions. Private employers that hire people w/o union support work their employees like dogs. No vacation days or pay, no sick days or pay. Be thankful you have a job or go home is there attitude. Unions protect employees from these types of people. I am a teacher but do not belong to the union because i don’t believe in their politics. Many teachers join the unin for the one million dollar insurance against false claims by the millions of crewed up students and parents.
One other thing why are Republicans so afraid to blame illegals on the state of the federal and state economies and the unemployment rate. Why is it soo much easier to go after working middle class taxpaying citizens? Answer: all politicians play ethnic, racial and gender politics. It is easier and safer to go after the middle class because they are mainly white males and fair game.

I don’t need an app to find what bills are going through. I’ll use http://thomas.loc.gov/home/thomas.php and I don’t need an app to have the government snooping into what I view that is what the patriot act is for.

  • USAFVet55

This sounds like a good idea, we can share our concerns on this forum, but will they bother to read them? Lord,I hope so. We are in real trouble. If they don’t do something to clean up this mess they’ve made (both parties) they might have go out and get a real job, if they can find one.

  • TERRY O’ROURKE

I THINK THIS IS A GREAT IDEA TO HAVE A PLACE WHERE WE CAN WORK WITH DILIGENT PEOPLE IN CONGRESS AND STAY ABREAST OF WHAT IS GOING ON THERE WITHOUT IT BEING FILTERED THROUGH NETWORK REPORTERS BIAS…
THIS COULD BE A VERY VALUABLE TOOL AS LONG AS WE RESPECT ONE AND ALL. LET’S NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP OF MANY LESSER FORUMS… I BELIEVE EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO VOICE HIS OR HER OPINION HERE, WITHOUT BEING BULLIED OR VERBALLY ABUSED IN ANYWAY… WE SHOULD HAVE SOME GROUND RULES… WE SHOULD HAVE A RIGHT TO VOTE ANY ABUSER OFF THIS FORUM REGARDLESS OF PARTY AFFILIATION FOR CONDUCT UNBECOMING… THERE SHOULD ONLY BE CIVIL DISCOURSE ALLOWED HERE… THIS IS A NEW FORUM, LET’S HAVE RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER AND KEEP IT CLEAN… ALSO PLEASE NO CONDESCENDING REMARKS… THANK YOU

  • Linda cook

This is super. Gives we the citizens a voice – our own voices

  • Sonjia Singh

    Just please stop spending money.

  • Dave

Now, maybe we can have an input on what our representatives are doing, but will they listen.

  • Vickie

This is a great way to voice our opinions and concerns, and i certainly hope they don’t fall on deaf ears.

  • Brenda Stevens

Great idea! Get Paul Ryan’s Bill passed – Let’s get this country back on the right track.

  • Tony Mitchell

This country will never get back on track. All our politicians are cowards. We have cities and states that are sanctuaries for illegal aliens and our government does nothing. States that attempt to control this invasion are attacked by the federal government. In Los Angeles LA Raza central the frigin Chief of Police is now not going to impound cars of illegals count driving w/o a license. He is supported by the Catholic church.
Without an armed revolution we are doomed to be Spanish speaking, Islam worshipping, government controlled drones. Basically liberal morons.

  • Bonnie Willey

Fantastic idea. Let’s pass Paul Ryan’s budget bill, use all our own natural resources to truly become energy independent, and totally secure our entire border.

  • Tony Mitchell

If what the citizens of America thought and mattered to politicians we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in as a Nation.
