A Paris startup has built a Raspberry Pi-powered inkjet that uses refillable HP cartridges with no DRM checks or subscriptions. Printers long ago stopped being simple office tools. They became vehicles for recurring revenue. Buy one cheap. Watch the ink warnings pile up. Pay premium prices for cartridges that often contain more plastic than ink. Then face the real sting when a firmware update renders third-party options useless. That cycle has defined the industry for years.

Now a small team in Paris wants to break it. Open Tools has built a working prototype called the Open Printer. It runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W. It accepts standard HP cartridges that users can refill themselves. And its firmware never bothers to check for authentication chips. The result looks less like rebellion than common sense applied to hardware.

The project surfaced on Crowd Supply months ago. A video released in recent weeks shows the machine printing both black and color pages. It handles cut sheets and paper rolls with an integrated cutter. Specs list 600 dpi for monochrome and 1,200 dpi for color. Those numbers sit in the same ballpark as many midrange consumer models from established brands. Yet the absence of any subscription or remote management sets it apart.

Leonard Hartmann leads the effort as mechanical engineer. His group secured support from Bpifrance and the design school ENSCI. The hardware combines the Raspberry Pi with an STM32 microcontroller that manages the cartridge side. A small 1.47-inch TFT screen and jog wheel provide local controls. USB ports, Bluetooth and planned Wi-Fi round out connectivity. Printing relies on CUPS, the same open-source system that already runs on Linux, macOS and other platforms. No proprietary drivers required.

This approach sidesteps the usual tricks. Commercial printers from HP, Canon, Epson and others embed chips in cartridges. Firmware looks for official signatures. When it finds a refill or third-party product instead, the machine may refuse to print or throttle performance. Open Tools simply omitted that check. “The DRM-dodging trick isn’t some clever hack that defeats an authentication chip; it’s much simpler than that,” MakeUseOf reported. “OpenPrinter’s firmware just never checks for one in the first place.”

Cartridges remain independent too. Empty one color and black-and-white jobs continue without interruption. Refills cost far less than official replacements. The design files themselves fall under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0. Users can study them, repair the machine or modify it. Commercial reuse stays prohibited. Open Tools also filed a patent on aspects of the system. That move raises eyebrows for an open-source effort but reflects the practical realities of protecting novel mechanical ideas.

The timing feels deliberate. Consumers have grown weary of the ink trap. HP has settled multiple lawsuits over its Dynamic Security updates that blocked non-genuine cartridges. A 2018 case brought a $1.5 million payout. European claims in 2022 reached up to $1.35 million. The company denied wrongdoing in both. Epson faced similar legal pressure and settled related claims in 2025. Even Canon, during the global chip shortage, shipped toner without authentication chips and published bypass instructions for error messages. The workaround effectively let third-party supplies work again. Brother drew accusations of degrading third-party toner via updates though it denied the claims.

Those episodes reveal something deeper. The authentication was never strictly about print quality. It protected a business model in which the printer sells at a loss and ink generates the profit. During shortages that model cracked. Canon showed the chips were optional. Open Tools took the next step and removed the dependency entirely.

Challenges remain. The prototype still needs refinement on ink drying, cleaning cycles, paper handling and dithering algorithms. Wi-Fi and Ethernet integration continues. No final print speed has been published. Pricing stays undisclosed. The Crowd Supply campaign has not launched. Nine months after initial reveal the team has shared progress updates and earned nominations for two French Design Awards. A raw clip from the prototype shows it printing and cutting paper with a brief message to viewers.

But dependence on HP cartridges carries risk. If the printer giant alters those designs the compatibility could vanish. Printhead patents held by major manufacturers have blocked many hobbyist attempts before. Building reliable inkjets at scale demands precision few small teams possess. Open Tools acknowledges the hurdles yet pushes forward through crowdfunding to avoid traditional gatekeepers.

Regulators have begun to notice too. The European Union prepares right-to-repair rules scheduled for mid-2026. American authorities have signaled opposition to unfair repair restrictions. These measures may not directly help an open-source printer. They signal shifting attitudes toward planned obsolescence.

Other recent efforts echo the frustration. Los Angeles voted earlier this year to ban single-use printer cartridges in city operations citing waste and cost. Discussions on X in recent days highlight growing interest in the Open Printer prototype with users sharing links to the demo video and praising the repairable design. One post from July 2026 called it “a printer you can repair” while another noted it as the start of broader change.

The Open Printer does not pretend to replace every office machine tomorrow. It targets users tired of paying for the privilege of printing. It offers schematics, community modification and freedom from firmware surprises. Success will hinge on whether the prototype reaches production at a competitive price and whether enough buyers care about openness enough to support it.

Still the existence of a functional model matters. It demonstrates that cartridge DRM was always a choice. Not a technical necessity. A small Paris team has shown one path around the barriers that major manufacturers spent years constructing. The video of that first print carries more than mechanical satisfaction. It suggests the ink wars might finally have a viable alternative.
