Blekko launches AdSpam algorithm

Blekko has launched a new AdSpam algorithm it says is the first of its kind created to find spam rather than rank results.

The algorithm is aimed at flagging pages which are spam and zapping them before they appear in search results.

Blekko says its AdSpam technology has identified 1.1 million domains as spam and removed them from its search index. Previously Blekko banned the top 20 content farms via curation efforts of its user base.

The Blekko Blog has more details. “So what is exactly is AdSpam? In short, it is a machine-learning algorithm that examines pages for a specific spam signals — the presence of multiple display ad positions on a single page and thin to zero content. Unlike algorithms used by other search engines, AdSpam is being used in conjunction with human curation to detect to continue the War on Spam.”

“So in a time where spam-free search is becoming increasingly important, you can be sure that Blekko’s new AdSpam technology will scan every new page on the Web before it gets added to Blekko search results. We believe the way to better search results is by using an algorithm that was created to kill spam, not just crawl it.”

    Thanks for the article. My English is not so good but.. I’m like a paraplegic lap dancer, she can do it but not as good as we’d actually like, really. So here it goes:

    First of all, who uses Blekko? I can see them failing big time. These programmers don’t have any common sense. You can’t let users (possible spammers, marketers, blackhatters themselves) influence search results. That’s the laziest attempt to be something and it will backfire on them. Also thin content doesn’t always mean spam (see Google’s collateral damage history). Ads on page doesn’t always mean spam (hosting has to be paid somehow even for non-spamming, informational sites). Unless you are God, there is no way to correctly identify spam. Google has trillions of dollars invested in a super algo. and they can’t do it. If they use Blekko’s raw anti-spam technology as is, they would kill the web as most sites, pages would be labeled spam. It’s like trying to grab a river with your hand.

    I think Blekko should abandon that silly idea to kill spam and start indexing the web without discriminating on sites like Ehow, etc. Only users that would discriminate against Ehow themselves are marketers, spammers and blackhatters who couldn’t beat the monster in rankings back at Google. I find eHow very useful myself so I bet millions of other users. Blekko needs to focus on being a search engine and not so much on killing spam to satisfy mostly the “techy” crowd. They need to focus on satisfying the needs of regular Jane and John Doe’ who wouldn’t care or recognize a t-bone about spam other than that rectangular can they buy at Walmart Let the searchers decide if the site is spam or not. You focus on indexing the web.

    I predicted Cuil’s death and I think Blekko will go the same route. Where is today that famous “human edited” directory again? What was it called? It was corruption riddle and nobody used it but spammers, marketers and scammers?

    My advice to Blekko:

    1. Don’t discriminate against sites unless they are harmful (viruses, etc.)

    2. You are surrounding yourself with the wrong crowd. I’d put my right hand on the chopping block that 99.9% of Blekko users are marketers, spammers, blackhatters. Come back down to earth and meet your real customers who actually wouldn’t recognize a t-bone:

    I had not heard of Blecko before. Blecko is better than Blekko, because it is to easy to spell Blekko as Blleko, Bllecko, or Bleko. If I could “short” this company I would. I give them until their funding runs out.
