September is the month for big hardware reveals this year it seems. Microsoft and Nokia will be showing off the future of Windows Phone 8 and presumably a new phone on September 5. One week later on September 12, Apple will be showing off the iPhone 5 and maybe even an iPad Mini. The next day, September 13, will see more information, including launch date and price, on the Wii U from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Unlike the former products from Microsoft and Apple, the Wii U is still dipped in relative mystery. We’ve seen it and some have played it, but we still don’t really know anything about it. There’s been no leaks in regards to launch date, price or launch games. All three factors are extraordinarily important to the success of Nintendo’s latest hardware.

Nintendo of America sent out an invite today saying that Reggie Fils-Aime will be holding an event in New York City to announce “more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment.” As Kotaku points out, every other event Nintendo has held in New York City ended up heralding the launch date and price of new hardware. There’s no reason to believe Nintendo would hold back here either.

The announcement in New York City coincides with a rumor stating that Wii U pre-orders will start in September. A supposed newsletter from Best Buy claims that the console will be up for pre-order in their stores at some point next month. You need a price and launch date to start pre-orders so that much pretty confirms what Reggie is going to be talking about.

We can’t forget that the September event is also a chance for Nintendo to really energize the core and make them excited about the Wii U. Nintendo won’t be able to count on millions of soccer moms buying a Wii U at launch this year without something like Wii Sports. Sorry, Nintendo, but Nintendo Land isn’t going to cut it. That’s why it’s of the utmost importance for Nintendo to really show off some core games that will be available at or near launch like Darksiders II, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, ZombiU and Rayman Legends.

Now it’s time to start seriously considering the price that Nintendo will launch the Wii U at. I’m going to baselessly speculate and say that the console will go for $300. That would be cheap enough for the core and casual to afford without looking like a cheap toy compared to the aging Xbox 360 and PS3.
