Why Netflix User Profiles Aren't Yet Available For Android

As previously reported, Netflix has finally announced the launch of user profiles. The feature appears to be launching in every market that Netflix currently operates in, and is rolling out over the next few days for the website, iPad, iPhone, Xbox 360, Apple TV and some smart TVs and Blu-ray players.

While no time table was given in the announcement, Netflix did say that the feature will soon come to Android and to the Nintendo Wii.

TechRadar spoke with Eddy Wu, director of product innovation at Netflix, about the lack of Android support. According to the report, Wu said the Android delay stems from the amount of resources the company has within the profile team. Marck Chacksfield reports:

He also hinted that there could be an overhaul of the Android service coming next year, noting: "There is stuff going on with Android, in that world, that we can't really talk about just yet."

There have been rumours that an Android and iOS remote app for Netflix was in the works but this is something that is yet to be confirmed.

Android has historically been something of a problem platform for Netflix. The company didn't launch an Android app until nearly a year after launching one for iOS, and even then, it only supported a handful of Android devices. Eventually, the Netflix experience became much more ubiquitous across Android devices.

Since launching on Android, the experience has continued to improve. Last fall, Netflix launched a new Android app that mimics the tablet experience.
