  • Anyone need a beer? If you’re reading this from the Czech Republic, there’s a good chance that you don’t need one because you already have one.

That’s because they lead the world in annual beer consumption per capita, with a whopping 158.6 Liters per person. That’s just shy of 42 gallons, if it’s easier to visualize that way. The Czech Republic edged out Ireland, Germany, and Austria for the top spot, and if you’ve ever been to one of those countries, you know that it’s quite the challenge to best them in the art of drinking.

When you take out the “per capita” restriction and just go by sheer volume, that’s where the good ol’ U-S-of-A shines. Here in the states, we pull down 23,974 megaliters a year (1 megaliter = 1 million liters). That’s good, but it’s only second best. China downs 28,640 megaliters. They are also top growing beer market in the world.

Here in the U.S., there’s something about living in Nevada that makes people drink a lot of beer (to be fair, there is Vegas to consider). They lead the way with highest per capita consumption (in gallons) at 44 a person per year. Other states whose residents drink their fair share? New Hampshire, North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota. If you’re looking to share a brew with someone, you’re least likely to find a beer drinker in Utah.

Since we know that civlization as we know it would never have made it withour beer, and we also know that beer might make you a better problem solver, why don’t you pour a nice tall glass and enjoy this infographic courtesy of 1001beersteins.
