  • On Monday, a Las Vegas cab driver discovered in his backseat an unimaginable surprise.

What Gerardo Gamboa thought was a brown paper bag filled with chocolate was actually loaded with $300,000 cash.

After commuting to the Bellagio resort, a doorman assisting a passenger into the vehicle noticed the bag. While waiting at a traffic light, Gamboa took a peak inside to find six bundles of $100 bills.

Instead of keeping the cash for himself, Gamboa decided to do the right thing and turn the money in.

‘‘I told my passenger, ‘You are my witness on this’ and then I immediately called my dispatcher,” he said.

The cab driver went back to the casino and reported his discovery. It took several hours for police officers and casino officials to return it to its rightful owner.

The large amount of cash actually belonged to a famous 28-year-old poker player. The gambler, who remains anonymous, also acted quickly and went to the cab company to retrieve his lost money.

Fortunately for the poker player, someone with a caring heart found his cash.

“I don’t care from $10 to higher. My dignity is not for sale, and that’s the way I am. That’s the way our parents taught us when I was a kid,” Gamboa said.

As a reward, Yellow Check Star Cab Company gave Gamboa a $1,000 check, dinner for two and named him driver of the year.

Ultimately, the taxi driver of 13 years wanted to show people that not all Vegas cab drivers are crooked but can be good people.

“I did the right thing, that’s it. They call us sin city. But it’s not. It’s angel city.”
