Angels center-fielder Torii Hunter accidentally set off his own alarm system at his home in Newport Coast on Wednesday, and when police responded he was greeted with a nasty surprise.
Even though they claimed to be Angels fans, the officers on the scene didn’t recognize him and drew their weapons while he retrieved his identification.
He later tweeted about the excitement:
They didn’t believe I lived here in Newport coast so they walked me upstairs at gunpoint to get my ID.
But their actions were part of standard procedure, according to Kathy Lowe, who is a spokesperson for the Newport Beach Police Department.
“Each alarm call we respond to we have to handle as if a crime has occurred or is occurring,” she said.
Hunter says he’s not upset at all and is thankful to the police department for their quick response.
The police departmen did a great job of protecting my home. Thanks guys!
He later cleared up his Twitter comment about being held at gunpoint:
The cops that were here today had there guns drawn but pointed downward in for safety. Those guys handled the situation like trained cops.
He later recounted a funny moment he shared with one of the officers:
When I showed him my ID, he said I’m an angel fan hope u guys have a great season. ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!!! Lol
