  • The game that hopes to found the urban-based animal survival genre is coming to the PlayStation Network next month. Today Sony announced that Tokyo Jungle is set to hit PlayStation 3 owners on September 25th. Two new trailers for the game have also hit the internet today, giving gamers a glimpse of a Tokyo overrun by animals and where survival is the only rule.

Tokyo Jungle is a different type of post-apocalyptic survival game. In contrast to most post-apocalyptic stories in which at least a few humans are able to eek out some sort of existence, humans are nowhere to be found in Tokyo Jungle. Instead, players chose to play as one of over 50 different animals, including cats, dogs, elephants, giraffes, pandas, chickens, deer, bears, and dinosaurs.

The object of the game is to survive in the urban jungle that is now Tokyo using each specific animal’s talents, though Sony hints that discovering the fate of mankind is a part of the game’s story mode. In survival mode, players will fight to claim territory and produce offspring, gaining survival points. These points can be used to unlock new animals and outfits that increase animal abilities.

Tokyo Jungle was developed by PlayStation C.A.M.P., a developer and talent search program Sony has put together to help indie talent in Japan get their ideas made into games. If Tokyo Jungle is any indication, programs such as C.A.M.P. should be more widespread and could become the source of fantastic new gaming ideas and IPs.

Check out the trailers below to get a sense of what’s in store for PlayStation 3 owners next month:
