While making an appearance on Andy Cohen’s talk show, “Watch What Happens Live“, Howard dishes on the real reason that he was no longer playing his character in the sequel. In the original “Iron Man”, Howard played the character, James Rhodes. In the sequel, he was replaced by Don Cheadle.

“This is going to get me in a lot of trouble, but who gives a f—k,” Howard said. “It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out.” Although he didn’t officially say his name, it was obvious just who exactly he was talking about: Robert Downey Jr.

It was originally reported that Howard would not be appearing in the sequel due to a salary dispute (Howard actually made more than Downey Jr. in the first film). Howard had originally signed on for three films, however he was offered a much smaller salary for the sequel than what they had originally agreed upon.

“We did a three-picture deal, so that means that you did the deal ahead of time,” Howard said. “It was going to be a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second one, a certain amount for the third. They came to me with the second and said, ‘Look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.’ And I called my friend—that I helped get the first job—and he didn’t call me back for three months.”

Despite the issues between Howard and Downey Jr., Howard says he harbors no hard feelings. “Oh, I love him. God’s gonna bless him,” he said.
