  • Téa Leoni last graced us with her presence on film in 2011’s Tower Heist. After a bit of a hiatus, she’ll be back on television later this year courtesy of CBS.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Leoni has nabbed the lead role in CBS’ upcoming Madam Secretary. The series will have Leoni portraying a college professor who suddenly becomes the Secretary of State following her predecessor’s death. The series will be written and produced by Barbara Hall – the creator of Joan of Arcadia. It will be directed by David Semel – a man credited with directing episodes of famous series like 7th Heaven and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

So, what can we expect from Madam Secretary? CBS isn’t saying much at the moment, but they say it’s like a mix of The Good Wife and 60 Minutes. In short, expect a hardcore political drama with fleeting moments of lightheartedness.

Alongside the announcement, CBS also shared the first trailer for the series that seemingly spoils the first story arc:

Alongside Madam Secretary, CBS announced a whole slew of new shows hitting the network this year.

First up is Halle Berry’s Extant airing this Summer:

In the Fall, the network is airing another drama called Scorpion:

If dramas aren’t your thing, CBS will have a new comedy with The McCarthys as well:

The new shows will join series that CBS has renewed for another year, like The Big Bang Theory and The Mentalist.
