The Daily (the new iPad news publication from News Corp.) has been out for a day now, and after having the chance to mess around with it, it’s hard for me to know just what to make of it, and frankly I’m having a hard time seeing this as a revolution in digital content (or print content or paid content).
Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has launched The Daily, a e-paper-based daily newspaper exclusively for the iPad, and the early results are about what you’d expect: rich, iPad-friendly content delivered with a subscription-based model.
In regards to The Daily, feelings of “meh” come from the product itself. While the newscycle is all over the launch, has anyone stopped to ask who wants this application? Even the most basic of iPad users surely understand that news can be gathered from a multitude of places, places even the iPad can access.
Rupert Murdoch is excited about tablets. The Guardian has a piece quoting him as calling them "a perfect platform" for cheap and convenient, up-to-date News Corp. content. He says the company has "tens of thousands of readers" through apps for the Wall Street Journal, the Times and the Australian.
News Corp. is reportedly considering working on some new app-based news product that would be separate from any of its existing print or web publications. An experiment in the future of news? Perhaps. A game changer? We’ll see. CNBC seems to think it might be.
News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch has had a lot of issues with search engines – most notably, Google. He has repeatedly threatened to block News Corp. content from search engines, but content from the Wall Street Journal, for example, still populates a significant amount of Google search results to this day.
There is a rumor that has been floating around the web for a few days (apparently starting at Italian newspaper La Repubblica) that Google is working on something called Newspass, which would let users pay for news content across multiple publications that charge for content – another way for publishers to get paid and still utilize Google (Google already has a few ways).
It’s been about five months since Rupert Murdoch first claimed that he would block search engines from News Corp. content, and even if not a lot’s happened as a result, Murdoch hasn’t let the matter slide. He issued another warning yesterday while at the National Press Club.

Although a few months have passed since the last big flareup, News Corp. may still be willing to go to war with Google. A fresh report indicates that Rupert Murdoch is indeed prepared to take the search giant to court, and has been talking to Microsoft about an exclusive deal, too.
