  • It’s the new year, and weight loss features prominently on many lists of New Year’s resolutions.

For 2014, there’s a new contender in the diet arena and it’s promising big results: the Super Shred Diet.

The diet is the brain child of Dr. Ian Smith.

In 2012, Smith published Shred: The Revolutionary Diet: 6 Weeks, 4 Inches, 2 Sizes. To achieve results, Shred combines a low glycemic index (GI) diet, meal spacing, and meal replacements.

Smith followed up with Super Shred: The Big Results Diet: 4 Weeks, 20 Pounds, Lose it Faster! The book released on December 31, 2013 – just in time for all the New Year’s resolution-makers.

What makes the Super Shred diet work? And why – when experts have preached against losing weight too quickly for years – does Smith now feel it’s acceptable health-wise to lose 20 pounds in four short weeks?

In a recent interview with Dave Plier on WGN Radio, Smith admits to being among those who insisted that it was unsafe and unhealthy to lose weight quickly. He was one of the many health and fitness experts who typically recommended losing only one to two pounds per week.

But he says that at some point, he realized that “it wasn’t that the weight loss itself was a problem, it’s that the methods used, they were a problem.”

That’s where Super Shred comes in. Over the summer, Smith worked with a large group of people who had previously used his original Shred program to lose weight, but had reached a plateau. He developed a program that enabled the group to lose, on average, 20 pounds in four weeks. That program became the basis for Smith’s new book.

Smith is careful to emphasize that Super Shred is meant to be a short term program for individuals who want to lose weigh quickly or have reached a weight loss plateau. He recommends following the original six-week Shred program after completing Super Shred. Unlike Super Shred, Shred is designed for long term use. Users complete a six-week cycle, then do another six weeks, but in a different order.

How does Super Shred work? First of all, Smith says it’s very simple because all meals are spelled out in the book.

The Super Shred diet puts an emphasis on meal spacing, snacking, meal replacement, and diet confusion.

Smith says meal spacing is one of the most important elements of the program because by regulating when you eat, you keep your metabolism “stoked,” causing your body to burn more calories. You’re also much less likely to overindulge at meal times.

Smith appeared on Good Morning America to discuss his new book, and released an excerpt on their blog. He shared the first full week of the diet, a shopping list, and a few recipes.
