Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were adorable when seated together at the American Music Awards–back in 2011. During tonight’s AMAs, Justin and Selena aren’t seated together.

That likely comes as a huge disappointment to Jelena fans who heard all about Justin Bieber serenading Selena Gomez in that Beverly Hills hotel this weekend.

TMZ reports, however, that the seating charts for the AMAs don’t have the two seated even close to one another.

They also report that Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have requested to “rub shoulders” at tonight’s AMAs. What do you suppose that means?

It is likely that seating for an awards show the size of the American Music Awards takes lots of planning well ahead of time. If seats were switched at the last moment to accommodate Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, lots of others would be inconvenienced as well.

And then there’s the notion that Justin and Selena might not truly be back together again. Even though he sang to her at the hotel lounge, and the two went for a walk together afterward, that isn’t necessarily indicative of romance.

Hollywood Life, however, says the two are “begging” to sit together this evening.

Jelena fans will find hope in the fact that the two requested that shoulder rub. Might that be the beginning of something bigger and better for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez?

Both Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez will perform at tonight’s AMAs. And while that’s got nothing to do with their relationship–or lack thereof, as the case may be–fans will get to see them perform during the same show.

It’s better than nothing–right?
