  • Being a new mom can be challenging, but definitely worthwhile.

Everyone’s experience with motherhood is different, and Savannah Guthrie was willing to share her experience as a new mother when she returned to the Today Show this week.

Guthrie had been on maternity leave and said that she was amazed at how much it really allowed her to bond with her baby and focus on her family.

“The best part about being on maternity leave is just having the days stretch out in front of me and I have only one thing to do, and that’s to take care of this little baby. And it feels like the greatest luxury of my life. I don’t think I’ve ever taken even two weeks off in a row my entire adult working life. Even though being a mom is the most challenging thing I’ve ever tried to do, I’ve never felt more exhilarated and relaxed and peaceful and joyous. Even on those nights when she’s waking up every couple of hours. I just feel thankful,” she said of her experience with maternity leave.

Savannah said that she absolutely loves being a new mommy, but admitted that there have been some difficult aspects of welcoming a new baby into her life as well.

She said that sleep deprivation is the worst and opened up about how hard it is to function with little sleep and “mommy brain.”

She also said that her husband has found her antics pretty amusing.

“After a period of time, getting up every couple of hours really starts to wear on you and you get very, very exhausted. And I find I really can’t speak anymore. I mean I can’t find basic, basic words, like fork, or turkey. We saw some wild turkeys and I said to Mike, “Look, there’s some— interesting birds out here.” And he said, “Do you mean turkeys?” she said.

Savannah and her husband Mike welcomed their baby daughter into their lives a little over 12 weeks ago and have been enamored with her ever since. It’s safe to say that Savannah will be sharing a lot more stories and photos of the baby in the future.
