  • Fans of Russell Crowe’s that had no idea that he was a musician were sure in for a treat during last Thursday night’s episode of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.

Russell Crowe has proved that he can sing through his role in Les Miserables, but how many people knew that he could play guitar? In the interview with Jimmy Fallon, the actor opened up about his previous time spent in music, and discussed the many bands that he has been in.

Discussion of his musical career followed a joke that Fallon made about a band that he had been getting into called The Roman Antics. Of course, since the band was not known, the audiences in the studio, and at home, had no idea what he was talking about.

Russell Crowe joked that he was walking into his trap, and Jimmy Fallon tried to keep it going when saying “You’ve never heard of them? The lead singer looks kind of like you.” Fallon then proceeded to show a short clip of a music video that the band had made in the 1980s, showing a young Russell Crowe singing.

Crowe claimed that before getting into acting, he was the pioneer of terrible band names, and even mentioned a band that he played in called Dave Decent And The Interrogatives. He was also in a hilariously titled band called Russ Le Roq And The Romantics.

Following their hilariously awkward interview about music, they also discussed Crowe’s new, and highly controversial film, Noah. Some people have been outraged by it, and it is the latest film from Darren Aronofsky, which features the story of Noah’s Ark.

To close out his appearance on the show, Jimmy Fallon asked if he would sing a song with the band. He said they had a guitar available, and the actor was more than willing to give the audiences an unexpected musical performance.

Russell Crowe teased everyone by asking Fallon if it was okay if they played an old Australian folk song, to which he replied “Yeah, we love old Australian folk songs.” Instead of playing an Australian folk song, he surprised everyone with his version of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.”

Jimmy Fallon played the harmonica while Russell Crowe sang the tune, and played guitar, and they were also backed by The Roots, The Tonight Show‘s house band. Crowe also appeared on an album that paid tribute to Kris Kristofferson several years ago, covering his song “Darby’s Castle.”
