“Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke is currently facing a legal battle over his song, and court documents are providing big revelations about his role in its creation. The Hollywood Reporter recently obtained the April depositions of Thicke and his collaborator Pharrell Williams from a lawsuit with the children of Marvin Gaye, who claim that “Blurred Lines” is a rip-off of their father’s 1977 hit “Got To Give It Up”.

The biggest revelation that Thicke made in his sworn testimony was the fact that he didn’t write the hit single. He said that he was jealous that someone else had written and produced the biggest hit of his career, and he wanted part of the credit for it. “The reality is, is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song,” he said.

Williams corroborated Thicke’s statement, but said in his deposition that the song “wouldn’t be what it was—what it is today” without Thicke’s vocals.

Thicke further admitted that he was “high on Vicodin and alcohol” when he showed up at the studio to record the song, as well as during subsequent interviews to promote it. In a GQ interview during promotions for the single, Thicke claimed that he and Williams listened to the Marvin Gaye song in question for inspiration. However, when asked about the interview during the deposition in April, Thicke implied that he had been high at the time. “Every day, I woke up, I would take a Vicodin to start the day and then I would fill up a water bottle with vodka and drink it before and during my interviews,” he said.

In his statement, Thicke said that he had been off Vicodin for two months at that point in time but was still drinking alcohol.
