  • Ricky Berens says he hasn’t had more than two weeks off since he was in high school, and now that the gold medal-winning Olympic swim meet is behind him, he’s ready to see what else the world has to offer. But he kicked off his retirement in style; after working so hard to keep his body in shape for the games and never wasting a single calorie, Berens and his teammates headed straight to McDonald’s to celebrate their win with junk food.

“We have a strict diet and we do everything by the book and this is our time to relax, celebrate, and really veg out,” he said.

Although Berens is only 24-year old, Olympic athletes are often considered to be at their peak long before that. The athlete says he would be happy to go back to school to earn his Master’s degree in sports management.

“I couldn’t have picked a better way to go out,” he said after helping his team win the gold. “It has been such an emotional Olympics so far. To be a part of that relay, an epic relay, it’s a dream come true.”
