  • The book series has not even been written yet, but Reese Witherspoon is already excited enough that she is on board with Lionsgate to produce an upcoming trilogy.

Lionsgate has acquired the film rights to the unwritten books, with the release date of the films of course being unknown. The series will be a young adult trilogy called The Outliers, and will be written by Kimberly McCreight.

The first book of the trilogy will be available in bookstores late in 2015, but Reese Witherspoon has great confidence that it will be successful, possibly due to the success of Kimberly McCreight’s recent novel.

Reese Witherspoon has had a great deal of experience as a producer already, and particular with films that have been adapted from novels. Prior to The Outliers, she has been a producer on Legally Blonde 2, Penelope, Wild, and the incredibly popular Gone Girl, which is set to hit theaters later this year, and stars Ben Affleck.

The young adult series will be the follow up to Kimberly McCreight’s debut novel Reconstructing Amelia, which was a huge success. That novel was released in December of 2013, and appeared on the New York Times hardbound bestseller list the first week after being published.

According to Variety, The Outliers will center around a young woman who has her best friend go missing. Her friend turns up in a remote spot in the woods, and is found with a group of people that call themselves The Outliers.

They are a strange group of people who claim to be able to harness “intuition,” and turn it into a powerful psychological weapon. The main character joins the Outliers in the hopes of rescuing her friend, but soon finds herself running for her life.

McCreight’s debut novel even drew comparisons to Gone Girl, and follows a mother in search of what happened to her teenage daughter, following her mysterious death. It is currently being turned into a film with Nicole Kidman in the lead.

Reese Witherspoon looks to continue her success as a producer, and perhaps hopes that it can even encourage people to read more, as people often want to read the books that the films are based on before they are released.

Lionsgate looks to be the dominant studio with YA franchises after obtaining the rights to this series, and has already had great success with both The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games, which still has two films set to be released.

In addition to Reese Witherspoon, Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman, and Bruna Papandrea will serve as producers on The Outliers. HarperCollins acquired North American publishing rights to McCreight’s upcoming trilogy earlier this year.
