For the longest time, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has been in a closed beta. Now the developers at Superbot are ready to open the beta to everybody as they head into the last month of development. The open beta is similar to the current closed beta, but there’s one crucial difference – Cross Play.

Sony announced today PlayStation All-Stars will be heading into public beta tomorrow when the PlayStation Store updates. It will help Superbot stress test the servers and hopefully squash the last few bugs that may plague the game. It will also help them test the Cross Play compatibility as the beta will be available on both the PS3 and the Vita.

At first, the open beta will only be available to PlayStation Plus members until October 23. At that point, it will be available to everyone. The beta will only be open until October 30 though so potential buyers are encouraged to try out the beta while they still can. One point to note is that any Vita owner, regardless of Plus status, will be able to join the beta starting tomorrow. It’s the least they can do for those of us who put down the money for a Vita.

The open beta will be similar to the closed beta in that only a few characters will be playable. Players will be able to try out Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Colonel Radec, Sly Cooper, PaRappa, and Fat Princess. Only two stages – Metropolis and Hades – will be available as well. As for play modes, four-player and 2 v2 tournaments will be the only ones available for now.

Sony also announced that the pre-order program for the game that was announced during E3 has been extended to all the characters. Of particular note, the alternate pre-order costume for Raiden dresse the Metal Gear Rising hero in his original costume from Metal Gear Solid 2. The costumes will also be available on both versions of game as PlayStation All-Stars supports Sony’s new Cross Buy program. In essence, those who buy the game on the PS3 will get a free download code for the Vita version.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is still on track to launch on November 20. If the beta goes well, the game will hopefully be almost perfect at launch.
