In the wake of a recent New York Daily News story that revived sexual allegations against Peyton Manning, one of his first coaches in the NFL quickly came to his defense.

During the NFL Scouting Combine held on Wednesday, Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians was asked about the nasty allegations claiming that Manning had not only assaulted a former University of Tennessee trainer sexually, but also tried to cover up the offense with the help of his influential family.

The 63-year-old coach implied that the timing of the story’s release is quite interesting, having exploded right after Peyton Manning and the rest of the Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50. The article, he says is mere “sensationalism,” and explained that people are just nitpicking on typical misguided actions that most people do in their younger years.

“We all did things in college when we were growing — this was just a bigger story now, I think because of who he is and what he did, not what happened back then,” said Arians. “To me, it’s sensationalism. Somebody trying to get their name out there and use him for a stepping stone. That’s just my personal opinion.”

Two weeks ago, lawyer and writer Shaun King of the New York Daily News wrote an “exposé” on Peyton Manning, alleging that he “mooned” the face of a female trainer named Dr. Jamie Naughright during his college days at UT in 1996. She filed defamation charges against the quarterback in 2003 but eventually settled the case.

“”If we’re all going to get nitpicked for what we did in college, we’re all in trouble,” Arians added.

Aside from being Manning’s position coach at UT, Bruce Arians also served as the quarterback coach for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 to 2000 when Peyton Manning as just starting out in the NFL.
