  • Periscope, Twitter’s popular live-streaming service, turned one year old on Saturday. The company announced that it has surpassed 200 million broadcasts and that 110 years of video are watched live every day in its Android and iOS apps. That doesn’t even count people watching the recorded streams or watching on Periscope.TV or in tweets.

Here’s a timeline of Periscope’s launches over the past year:

The Periscope team had this to say about its first year in a blog post: “We’re proud of what we’ve built together and we’re excited to share just how far we’ve come. As of today, over 200 million broadcasts have been created on Periscope and over 110 years of live video are watched every day on iOS and Android. For everyone who joined us along the way, we hope this reaffirms that you are a part of something bigger. Thank you for making Periscope a vibrant global community– it means everything to us.”

Periscope says Time Watched is the metric it cares about the most for several reasons. For one, it’s most reflective of the value Periscope creates for people and the world. It also captures viewership of broadcasts outside of iOS and Android, like at periscope.tv, though it still hasn’t shared how much is being watched from there.

“Time Watched serves as a proxy for active user growth, without suffering some of the limitations of focusing exclusively on a metric like Daily Active Users (DAU) or Monthly Active Users (MAU),” the company said back in August. “Although it’s useful for us to see that our DAU graph is trending upwards, we don’t think it’s the most important metric for assessing our overall success.”

Periscope made a major change in January when it began allowing live streams (and recordings) to be playable inside of Twitter timelines. This presents more opportunities for businesses to gain visibility and better utilize the service. This should also significantly add to the Time Watched metric.
