It’s official. Paula Patton and Robin Thicke are separating after being married for nine years. The shocking announcement came on Monday.

Thirty-six-year-old Thicke famously spoke about the couple’s passionate union with Elle in October 2013. “The spice is not our problem. We’re overspiced. We could probably take a few spices off the shelf.”

Thicke went on to add that Paula enjoyed listening to his music. “Yes. [She listens to my music.] In fact, she likes to do it more than ever now. Sometimes she’ll even play groupie for me,” he said.

Thirty-eight-year-old Paula Patton shared details with Prestige Hong Kong Magazine about their relationship in September. “I’ve been there for his down moments and he’s been there for mine. Life is full of peaks and valleys. Robin has always been a great person to remind me to celebrate now,” she said.

Months after discussing the longevity of their union, Patton took to her Twitter account in December in order to voice her support and show her pride for Robin Thicke’s Grammy nominations.

However, those close to the couple are not surprised to hear that the two decided to separate. According to a source who spoke with Us Weekly, “Their marriage was unravelling for a long time. It has been a long time coming.” Another source went on to further explain, “It is not a shock to Robin or Paula, and it is something they have discussed for a long time.”

Patton released a public statement to People that the two will remain on good terms and always be friends. “We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” the official statement read.
