  • Patrick Stewart isn’t gay, folks. Sorry. Stewart was mistakenly outed in an article in The Guardian that discussed actress Ellen Page’s decision to come out, and while the “news” may have had some people saying “I told you so,” the X-Men actor is indeed a straight man. No surprise there, but Stewart isn’t upset at all by The Guardian’s mistake and has used it to make his Twitter page more entertaining than it usually is.

Page announced that she is gay at the “Time to THRIVE” conference last week. “I’m here today because I’m gay, and because maybe I can make a difference,” Page told the audience. Page also said that she is “sick of lying by omission” and hopes that her coming out will help others who are struggling with the decision.

Quite a few celebrities have praised the Juno actress for her courage. Page thanked the people who have been supportive of her announcement on Twitter last Saturday, and Patrick Stewart responded by posting that he supports her as well:

Since celebrities and non-celebrities coming out isn’t considered as controversial as it once was, Jane Czyzselska, a writer for The Guardian, decided to discuss whether Ellen Page’s announcement was newsworthy. In the article, Czyzselska talked about how some gay people–including Stewart–believe Page’s speech was important. Check out an excerpt from the accidental outing below.

Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page’s coming out speech is newsworthy because a high-profile and surprisingly politically aware young actress has decided not to play by the rules that so many closeted Hollywood actors are advised to follow if they are to enjoy mainstream success.

After realizing the mistake, the article was amended to remove “gay” from the paragraph, but not before quite a few people caught wind of the outing, including Stewart. The actor, who is married to jazz singer Sunny Ozell, didn’t take issue with the mistake and made light of it on his Twitter page.

So, no, even though quite a few people have questioned whether Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are partners (thanks to the documentation of their adventures they readily provide for us on Twitter), Stewart isn’t gay.
