The Future of Search Looks a Lot Like the Present (on Steroids)

Another Search Engine Strategies conference, another conversation about the future of search. It’s a regular topic, but one that never loses relevance, as the search landscape continues to change dramatically, even between conferences. Look at all Google has done this year, for example. Not only did we get the left panel navigation, but Instant search. Those are probably the biggest changes to the interface, but there are plenty of other things going on.

Almost exactly 13 months ago, Dick Costolo joined Twitter as its COO after founding FeedBurner and working at Google.  Now he’s received a considerable promotion, with Evan Williams announcing that Costolo will serve as Twitter’s CEO.

Facebook announced a few Platform updates, including updates to the Live Stream Plugin, "liked" articles appearing in search results, and improvements to real-time updates.

One story that’s capturing a lot of attention today is Facebook surpassing Google in time spent on site in the U.S. Silicon Alley Insider has a chart illustrating as much. 

Bedbugs Found At Google New York

It seems that bedbugs can be found everywhere these days, and the New York office of a certain search giant is no exception.  Late yesterday, a Googler reportedly tweeted that her workplace had been invaded.

According to Nicholas Carlson, the pammy5 Twitter account belonging to "a Googler in marketing" just sent the message, "jeepers i am not immune from the bedbug epidemic.  bedbugs have been found at work."

Google Acquires Social Startup Angstro

A company that was founded for the specific purpose of addressing one of Google’s weaknesses has now been acquired by the larger corporation.  Angstro should help Google (and whatever sort of social network it’s building) distinguish between lots of results for a given name.

Angstro is shutting down due to the acquisition, and Google’s given no sign of when anything will resurface, so don’t count on being able to try the tech out for yourself in the near future.  But the company’s search powers do sound impressive.

Twitter Names President Of Revenue

Here’s something for individuals who have expressed concern about Twitter’s underwhelming financial achievements: three and a half years after the company was officially founded, Adam Bain has been appointed Twitter’s president of revenue.

Bain previously enjoyed the title "President, Audience Network" at Fox Interactive Media.  He’s worked for Fox Sports, the Los Angeles Times, and Cleveland.com, too.
