  • The man who took 77 lives last summer in Norway saw his trial go underway today as chilling recordings of the event were played to the courtroom.

33-year old Anders Behring Breivik has admitted that he was behind the shootings that took more lives than any other peacetime event, and says he did it because he was protecting Norway from Islamic immigration. Breivik was behind a car bombing in Oslo–which killed 8 people–just hours before going on a shooting rampage at Utoya Island, where there was a summer camp being held for the youth wing of the governing Labor Party. He says he did it all in self defense on behalf of Noraway.

Police received an anonymous phone call–which was played for the court–from a girl who hid in a bathroom and whose pleas for help can be heard just before gunfire explodes in the background. But officers didn’t respond to the call for another hour, and questions are now being raised as to why it took so long. Those questions are especially important considering Breivik called police twice himself to surrender.

“My name is Anders Behring Breivik. I’m a commander of the Norwegian Resistance Movement. Could you give me the head of Delta?” he said in one of the calls. “I’m on Utoya. I’m a person who wishes to surrender.”

Breivik claims he founded a group called Knights Templar several years ago, and it is for this order that he appears to have killed in the name of. He denounced the Norwegian courts during the trial, saying he doesn’t recognize them.

“I do not recognize the Norwegian courts,” he said. “You have received your mandate from political parties which support multiculturalism. I do not acknowledge the authority of the court.”

Two hearings to determine Breivik’s mental state have already been held; the first declared him a psychotic paranoid schizophrenic. The second declared him sane but with severe narcissistic personality disorder. If a third shows him to have mental issues, he will be forcefully remanded to a psychiatric hospital.
