  • The “Disco Demolition” of 1979 was recreated on Saturday when fans of the baseball team Charleston RiverDogs were asked to bring Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus merchandise.

The promotion was dubbed “Disco Demolition 2: You Better Belieb It” and fans were able to get tickets to the game for only $1 if they brought Bieber and Cyrus merchandise with them to be destroyed.

In a statement on Friday, RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols said, “Disco Demolition 2 is dedicated to the eradication of their dread musical disease, like the original Disco Demolition attempted to do. We are going to take Bieber and Cyrus’ merchandise and memorabilia, put it in a giant box, and blow it to smithereens. It is all in good fun.”

The first Disco Demolition was a promotional stunt in order to lure more fans to watch the game between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Many of those who attended were there to witness the demolition and not the game. Back then, disco music had become very popular and that sparked backlash from rock music fans. Fans were asked to bring disco records and paid only 98 cents for their ticket.

Supporters of the event posted on Twitter saying, “That’s right! @ChasRiverDogs gonna blow up some #Bieber and #MileyCyrus tonight!! #praiseGod.” Another user wrote, “@ChasRiverDogs Thousands coming together for a good cause… getting rid of all this Cyrus/Bieber paraphernalia.”

All the Bieber and Cyrus merchandise were placed in a giant stereo box with fireworks. There were posters, CDs, cups, and bags. Fans even brought posters and banners that read “Stop Beliebing.”

After the game, the stereo box was placed on the baseball field and was lit up. Sparks flew out of the stereo box and the crowd cheered as all the Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber merchandise were destroyed.
