  • It’s never shocking when celebrity memorabilia sells for large sums at auction. What can be shocking is what people are paying said sums for.

As reported by the BBC, a lock of Jagger’s “washed and trimmed” hair was bought for £4,000 – equal to roughly $6,000 – at an auction held to benefit the Changing Faces charity. The precious strands were donated by a former girlfriend, Chrissie Shrimpton. She met Jagger while he was a student at the London School of economics.

The strangeness of the buy does not stop with the fact that the hair in question is roughly 50-years-old. The lock was expected to draw half the amount it did. The anonymous buyer – and let’s be honest, you can only buy something like this anonymously – must be a huge Stones fan with a cloning machine in the works.

Luckily, the auction included items of the non-cringe-inducing nature, such as a Jimmy Page owned guitar and handwritten David Bowie lyrics.

In the grand scheme of things, having an ex-girlfriend sell your hair for a good cause must be one of the nicer outcomes that can occur. Jagger and company continue to tour and attempt to stay relevant by doing things such as performing with Katy Perry.
