  • After a week of free agency, and tons of other players being signed and released, Michael Vick may have thought that his time would never come. He finally has a new team to play for, and has signed with the New York Jets.

The Jets had been a likely place for Vick to land for a while, considering the problems that both Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith have given them, and perhaps it was just a matter of time before they agreed to terms.

When joining the Jets, he signed a one-year, $5 million deal, and he believes that there are still a few valuable seasons left in him. Vick spent his past five seasons with the Eagles, and entered last season as a starter before suffering a hamstring injury in Week 5 against the Giants.

Michael Vick is continually judged for what he did off the field, and occasionally for his playing on the field, placing him at the top of the list of the most-disliked players in the NFL, but can this new opportunity allow him to salvage his career? Perhaps the New York Jets think so.

Speaking on his feelings of the possibility of being on the bench, he said “I wouldn’t say that I would necessarily be OK sitting on the bench all year, but I know what I signed up for. I know what I came to New York to do. First and foremost, I came to compete and be a helping hand for Geno.”

At the same time that Vick was signed, the Jets subsequently cut Mark Sanchez in a move that most people had probably expected to happen. The Jets struggled greatly last year with their rookie Geno Smith, and having Vick to mentor him could make a difference, and help them become a winning program.

When signing the contract, Michael Vick understood that Geno Smith would be the starting quarterback. However, there will always be an open competition for the position, and the veteran quarterback previously claimed that he would be a starter in the NFL in the 2014 season.

Michael Vick has had his share of issues throughout his career, and as a 33-year-old quarterback, his time in the NFL may be quickly coming to an end. After joining the New York Jets, he will be reunited with Marty Mornhinweg, who he spent four years with in Philadelphia.
