  • PlayStation Plus has paid for itself time and time again with a number of free games on the PS3 and PS Vita each month. Even more value was added with the PS4 and Sony has been releasing one free game on the platform ever since launch. In April, gamers will be happy to know that one of the most anticipated indie games for the PS4 will be the month’s free selection.

Sony announced that April 1 will see the launch of Mercenary Kings on the PS4. The game will, of course, be free for PlayStation Plus members. For those unfamiliar with the title, the best way to describe it would be a cross between Metal Slug and Borderlands. Mercenary Kings features the side-scrolling run and gun gameplay of Metal Slug, but it has weapon crafting and RPG elements to keep you coming back for more. It also four player co-op for those who want to tackle the game with friends.

For PS3, gamers will have three titles to choose from in April. First up is the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham City. If you have yet to play it, you’ll definitely want to check it out before Batman: Arkham Knight launches later this year on the PS4. The second free PS3 game in April is Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, a remake of the Sega Genesis platform. Lastly, Stealth Inc.: A Clone in the Dark will be your free indie selection on the PS3.

As for the PlayStation Vita, gamers will have two titles to choose from in April. The first is Velocity Ultra – a shmup that features a unique teleportation mechanic. The second – Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD – is a fleshed out version of the original tower defense title.

All of the above titles will be free for PlayStation Plus members at some point during the month. Sony has already revealed that Mercenary Kings and Batman: Arkham City will be tomorrow’s free games though. For the other titles, you’ll just have to wait and see.
