All you need is a dollar and a dream. And that dream will have to wait for the millions of people who purchased a Mega Millions ticket in hopes to strike gold on Tuesday night. The winning numbers were: 20, 30, 32, 42 and 71. The Mega Ball was 14. There was one player from New York who got the first five numbers but failed to hit the Mega Ball. He will still win $1 million.

So, the kitty will continue to grow. The estimated jackpot for this Friday’s 11 pm drawing will be $149 million or the cash option of $80 million. Lottery officials say that they will continue to use the new Mega Millions matrix. More numbers are added for the first five numbers called, however, the numbers for the Mega Ball are cut. This means more smaller prizes but less of a chance at the big monster payoff.

Mega Millions works pretty much the same as the standard lottery. It still costs a buck and you pick six numbers or have the lottery machine pick them for you. The main difference is that you need to hit the Mega Ball number to collect the big prize. The last drawing on November 5th also featured a player who hit five of the six numbers. So close.

The chances of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 258,890,850. The Mega Millions jackpots start at $15 million. An additional $5 million per draw is added each time a player fails to hit all six lucky numbers. The drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday night at 11 pm EST.
