Matthew McConaughey has reinvented himself in the past few years. For years his filmography seemed to revolve around romantic comedy material. His natural good looks and appeal to women, to say nothing of his instantly-recognizable voice, made him an appeal for the rom-com audience.

But he was being typecast, and Matthew McConaughey knew he had to change something. If you build a career with your looks as a total focus, what happens when you get older? What happens when you get a reputation as a married father? It’s not to say that older guys and dads can’t be in rom-coms — look at Sleepless in Seattle for the dad angle, and As Good As It Gets for the older guy — but to build a career on it almost exclusively is a gamble.

So Matthew McConaughey changed things up. He has since won accolades for Dallas Buyers Club, which was a real departure from his previous image. His role in True Detective also ran up hard against his nice guy image and took him into a darker territory.

But Matthew McConaughey made another big change-up a few years back. His image that helped him land rom-com roles also had him in relationships with such Hollywood names as Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Renee Zellweger, Patricia Arquette, Penelope Cruz.

In a new biography about Matthew McConaughey, author Neil Daniels tells about the woman who put a ring on McConaughey.

Matthew McConaughey: A Biography tells the story of the day the star was in the Hyde Lounge club on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood with buddy Lance Armstrong. He was known for being with Penelope Cruz, but saw Brazilian model Camila Alves walk in.

“The first time I saw her walk across the room,” McConaughey related, “I didn’t say, ‘Who is that?’ I said, ‘What is that?’

“The way she moved, I could see a person who knows who they are. There’s a person who spends time with herself, and is not advertising for this world, and is not asking permission. From that night I haven’t been on a date with anyone else”

Neil Daniels’ new book tells tales about McConaughey’s love life, his arrests, and his ambitions as a father. McConaughey explains that he is more sure of being a dad even than of being an actor.

“When I was 20 years old, McConaughey said, “I didn’t know what I wanted for a career. But I knew I wanted to be a father. It had been the thing that, since I was very young, I looked up to. The men I looked up to the most were fathers – men who raised good kids.”
