  • Madonna has been tapped to direct another film, and this one is based on a book. The famous pop singer will be returning to the director’s chair for an adaptation of a recent novel titled Ade: A Love Story.

The film will be based on a novel by Rebecca Walker, who just published her debut novel in October of 2013. She is the daughter of author Alice Walker and civil rights lawyer Mel Leventhal. Walker is most well-known for her work The Color Purple, which was also adapted into an Academy-Award winning film.

Prior to this film, Madonna had directed a comedy in 2008 called Filth and Wisdom, although it was not a feature film, and did not receive much attention. In 2011, she did the period piece W.E., which followed the real-life love story of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.

She has also starred in a handful of films including Desperately Seeking Susan, Evita, and A League Of Their Own.

Rebecca Walker had written a memoir prior to her debut novel, in which she discussed growing up as an interracial child, and mixed religions in the household. The book was called Black, White, and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self, and her latest book even features a narrator similar to herself.

The story of Ade: A Love Story centers on a 19-year-old American student who is traveling with a feminist companion in Africa. She falls in love with a young Muslim man on an island off the coast of Kenya. However, their plans to marry get complicated after both cultural and political forces get involved.

Madonna is a big fan of the book, and has already provided a blurb to go along with promotional material for the novel. It is the first novel that Madonna will be bringing to the big screen, although several subjects are present throughout the novel that she has discussed through her music, and her personal life.

It is a love story at heart, but the book also touches on several major issues important to her such as sex, religion, race and lesbianism all figure into the story at one point or another. In the book, the narrator’s mother is a Christian, while her father is Jewish, just like Rebecca Walker’s parents.

Along with Madonna as the director of the film, Ade: A Love Story will feature Rebecca Walker, Jessica Leventhal, and Bruce Cohen as producers. Cohen previously produced the hit film Silver Linings Playbook.
