Madeline Stuart, an 18-year-old model with Down syndrome, walked the runway at New York Fashion Week on Sunday. Stuart, who hails from Brisbane, Australia, made international news earlier this year when she landed two modeling contracts–one for fitness brand Manifesta, and the second with everMaya, an eco-friendly maker of handbags.
Modeling Hendrik Vermeulen’s 2016 Spring collection at Vanderbilt Hall, Madeline Stuart not only touted the merits of the designer, but showed those who might be unaware of them, the amazing abilities of people with Down syndrome.
“We are absolutely thrilled to work with a talent like Madeline on our newest national ad campaign,” Damian Graybelle, everMaya’s president, said in a statement at the time Madeline Stuart was signed. “All of us at everMaya feel very strongly about creating a brand that is rooted in a spirit of inclusion and providing opportunities for those who begin life with barriers to success.”
The company even created a handbag named after her–called “The Madeline.”
Madeline Stuart rocked the runway in two separate ensembles. During both stints on the catwalk, however, she sported glittery makeup.
Madeline Stuart is just one of many young women and men with disabilities who have broken down barriers in the fashion world. She is the first to model during New York Fashion week, however.
Kudos to Madeline Stuart on a job well done.
