  • The Google I/O day one keynote will begin soon. Go here to watch it live. I will post notes below. Please forgive the inevitable typos that are sure to occur.

Please forgive the sub-part notetaking. We’ve been having some techincal difficulties, and connectivity issues at Google I/O. Without wading through the notes, essentially the topic is HTML5 and how it is changing the web, and will continue to do so. Numerous examples are being presented, and you’ll no doubt see more and more as the week progresses.

There have been several announcements, such as Google Wave becoming part of Google Apps and being available for everyone (as opposed to being invite-only),  a preview of the Chrome Web Store, the open sourcing of VP8 and the introduction of the web m project. Google is also working with VMware on marriage of cloud back-end/front-end intergation.

Sports Illustrated has an interesting new web experience. Adobe showcased some new HTML5 support.  Everything announced is heavily related to HTML5, which is being deemed the future of the web.

    Main takeaways bolded….

    Notes begin:

It’s really hot in here. Still waiting…people still filing in. They said they’ll be starting in a few minutes.

Some annoying electronica playing….loudly. Almost easier to communicate with the person next to you via IM/social media/email.

    VP, Engineering Google. Vic

Largest Google I/O …the one that sold out the fastest…2 and a half months in advance.

I/O stands for two important elements of web culture – innovation and open.
"The web is the most important platform of our generation." – the only platform that truly belongs to all of us.

He talks about last year’s event.

We can move the web forward…We are far from done. The Web has important challenges we need to address as a community.

HOw can we make web apps discoverable? HOw can we make it easier for devs to monetize? Extend the web’s reach…

Our proposed answers to some of these questions at this conference….The web is growing up…

    Our opening keynote speaker:

Carry banner of open web – Google VP of product management Sundar Pichai:

More than one surprise tomorrow morning.

    SP:

    Talking about HTML5

From a user standpoint..people are spending more of our time

Need to make sure web apps can do everything desktop apps can do. This is what HTML5 work is all about.

24 months ago there was pioneering work from other browsers before chrome even existing…lat year during google i/o – the momentum was there. where do we expect to be by the end of this year?

    More HTML5 in more browsers.

More HTML5 on the web – it’s eveywhere. how do we make use of it?

    A few examples:

    Demo of Google:

Product manager from Chrome team – how gmail has been too simple…

one of the most popular features in gmail is sending email (laughter) most people attach files when they do that.

using html5 apis – users scan drag and attach.

    notifications

google chat – built into gmail – how do you receive when you’ure not on gmail. using notifications api – can receive email even when not on gmail.

     Charles Pritchard Founder MugTug

Real world examples of HTML5 in action

able to bring mugtug dark room onto client side – untethered – not connected to internet – don’t need to be. offline, still in cache…

    html5 apis

local storage, file reader….starts using the app

photos…being served from local computer….works with one that hasn’t been touched up yet….a few things wrong with the photo – applies effect…

next generation app – previews on chrome….

we’rew going to see a lot more of these in fthe future because html5 apps are eing heavily championed by major browsers.

Clicker.com – called tv guide for the web…

focuses on premium programming on web. no longer about when things are on, it’s about where they’re on and whether they’re on and what you actually get.

      launches of clicker tv

    uses HTML5…"really hums in chrome"

Talks about Lost…taken to website…comes up large screen play or you can hit full screen…on your keyboard just hit delete buton to get back to programming guide…demonstrates various features – "Purely native"

SP: one of the great things clicker.com

Talks about On2 – team and tech: pioneers in video codec, optimized for the web – 2 billion installs – integrated with flash, skype, etc.

over 2 billion videos a day on youtube – so this is very helpful for bandwidth

    completely open sourcing vp8

    announces webmproject.org

    Mike Shaver VP, engineeer Mozilla

as of today pleased to share with you youtube will support web m format…

with this, you can use high
quality video built into the stack, with great performance.

Demands on browsers increasing…taking advantage of hardware from other web m partners….

open video is now here in high quality and it’s embedded into the stack – part of everything you use like css, images, text

…want to see this on all browsers

    Open Software

    Images, man y things, didn’t have video…

we knew it wouldnt be easy…

Open Software – Hakon Wum Lie

    Images, man y things, didn’t have video…

    we knew it wouldnt be

We need for there to be freely open video and i think web m is it

We think that video being a first class citizen will join the other content types we have and we will have very rich …

if we can use these techniques right, by adding all of this video stuff, there’s still going to be lots of images out there…to the web community, i’d like to say "start using this". we all have video cameras in our pockets and we should do it.

Opera – reaching millions of people that wouldn’t otherwise have video access…

    SP:

we really need support of entire industry – we’ve been reaching out to many, many partners and received lots of suport – we are very grateful….

For vp8 to succeed…aspirations very very important….workign very hard for highly optimized audio available…

we’ve talked about html5 apis and given examples…more exmaples on the way…invites Kevin Lynch CTO of Adobe on stage.. See announcement article:

We’re out at Google I/O in San Francisco, and Adobe announced here that a new HTML5 solution is immediately available to web designers and developers. This comes in the form of an HTML5 Pack extension to Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, the recently launched version of the company’s HTML authoring, web design program.

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch is showing off the extension in the keynote, but WebProNews had a chance to speak with Adobe’s Senior Director of Creative Solutions, Lea Hickman about the release. She tells us what when Adobe does a lot of its product development, it has The "web pro" in mind. These are the company’s key customers, and this extension is really an extension of that philosophy.

Adobe says the extension provides more creative options to users – so they can more easily create, deliver and optimize compelling content consistently, across the widest array of screens, to maximize revenue streams and forward their businesses.

"Adobe prides itself on delivering industry-defining tools and being compatible with the most popular web programming languages, formats, APIs and libraries," says Hickman. "We continue to move forward to support the leading edge of work in HTML, enabling our customers to deliver creative content taking advantage of the latest in HTML capabilities.”

Adobe and Apple have of course had something of a falling out over Flash, as Apple sees HTML5 as the future moving forward. While Adobe has been pretty insistent that Flash isn’t going away, today’s release shows that Adobe isn’t denying progressive technologies just to stick with its own. In Adobe’s eyes there is room for both.

Kevin is currently demo-ing dreamweaver extension…

    Kevin:

Support for video: a lot of great work being done: going to put vp8 inside of flash player and distribute it to a billion people. going to push the codec.

the other area we’re working on – working with google on flash and you’re going to see more of this on day two.

    Sp:

problems: very hard for users to fidn web apps…

problem: finding apps on the web; example: try to find a great chess game, many great ones, but hard to find a great one.

    easier on a mobile phone.

    as devs, you need reach..

we want to create other altnernatives: it should be easy to create and sell app on the web: early preview: chrome web store

one caveat – these are web apps, you can find them on the web anywhere, but you can add them on your new tab page on chrome

invites terry mcdonnell, editor of sports illustrated: jokes about being old.

talks about magainzes having to change with the times…

devs in the room empowering me as an editor to create new versions of SI.

bringing si to netbooks, tablets…openign in chrome store….magazine came off press yesterday…pull out most important things in mag and translate them in a way

    that they’re more enjoyable….interactive stuff…polls….enriched by video….

conent that is enriched and like nothing you see on the web today…

    SP:

Very obvious terry’s passion for the quality and what they want to see…

it’s really possible to do this in the browser using html5.

hoping everybody will showcase app like what we just saw

can reach over 70 million users (chrome users)..as of today we are over 70 million users and the number is growing fast.

important to remember that web store will be there in CHROME OS as well…

will work in 40 languages – available in chrome dev channel soon….

"The future of the web is html5."

    introduces Lars Rasmussen

Google Wave is starting to grow up…

today wave is a product that people are starting to use to get real work done…

going to open up wave to everyone today – you no longer need an invitation.

we’re making wave part of google apps.

invitation-only preview for half a year and getting great feedback…

we hear a lot – wave changes the way you work – sometimes in subtle and unexpected ways – we hear this in many different contexts…

teacher has students do all research in wave and kids love the live typing…teacher loves she can see in real time what they’re doing and jump right in and provide guiodance..

wave stops issues from falling through cracks…

since wave is about getting work done, it’s important to make it available at work and schools . that’s why were’ making it part of google apps – no extra cost.

if you tried it in previw and didnt think it was quite ready, come back and try again – made a lot of improvements.- added tutorials…try out wave. i think you’ll find it makes you more productive…

some of the coolest things about wave, you guys have build (devs)…

today, we’re checking off a bunch of top requeste features for api – change that means robots can live anywhere on web…makes a lot easier to integrate…

    launching new wave data api…

    adding media/attachment features to robot/gadget apis…

today SAP is announcing that they’re new product streamwork will suppot wave federation protocol…

to make this sort of thing easier, we are today open sourcing additiona compentns in browser editor – also publishing beginnings of a client server protocol –

Google director of engineering – David Glazer

open standards have always allowed more choice which leads to more innovation…

the web is already changing the way we work…

we’ve looked for who can we work with who shares these values…

hapy to announce- we’ve been working closely with VMware….

    to lead innovation in enterprise

welcomes: Paul Maritz, president/ceo of vmware

just about only hope for apps is through virtualization…

we’ve been doing a lot of work in this world – allowing companies to become more cloud like. extending data centers outside their own premises, …all well and good, but the question becomes what about new apps…there will be "man clouds" out there-  internally, service provider, companies like google….wouldnt it be great if we had a way of writing apps but also be affordable….

the new operating system for the cloud

our premise, as is googles – the extended frameworks…devs in the last several years have voted with their feet, and now work within frameworks that give them higher level of productivity….

the new operating system for the cloud

our premise, as is googles – the extended frameworks…devs in the last several years have voted with their feet, and now work within frameworks that give them higher level of productivity….

late last year started in depth conversations with google – giving devs efficient great cloud based apps – been working with google to bring what we know about writing back end with what google has developed around the front end – a perfect marriage is to bring these two techs together – get the fullest benefit from your investments – the more choice you give to devs, the more choice – roi – widest possible to deploy tech, greater motivation,

we’ve been wrokign to integrate springsource framework with google web toolkit… apps that work across clouds and across devices – in open source fashion

    Back to Glazer

going to show how we can use familiar tools to use fast development – integrated spring backend with gwt front end – power of html5 in complete java stack –

Ben Alex, sping souce, Bruce johnson, engineering director of google

if you used gwt before you know it makes it easy to build rich web apps completely in java,….

    Lots of code demo-ing ensues….

      Glazer:

announcing GWT 2.1 Widget libraries – ready for mobile devices…

Announcing CLoud portability – run your app where you want….

Welcomes Kevin Gibbs – Software engineer, GOogle with the app engine team

talks examples of google’s approch to enterprise software "we don’t believe in silver bullets" but seeing what w ecan do to help – enerprise – scaling apps –

compnaies grow, engineering teams change, in becomes increasingly diffiuclt to manage apps….you can go from a few apps to hundreds – managing the ecoysysem and

    keeping it healthy is hard…

we looked to google app engine…

we’ve made investments – announces – google app engine for business – represents new version of app engine built to solve real problems enterprises face – five

features – domanin consoe, pro support, formal sla, ssl and sql, sensible pricing

not available for everyone to use yet…just announced…publishing roadmap for google app engine for business…published at code.google.com. gives idea of when features will be avialable. some companies already testing it.
