  • Back in April, LinkedIn announced that it was acquiring Lynda.com, an online learnings site that enables people to learn new business, technology, and creative skills – the kinds of skills that you’d want to showcase on your LinkedIn profile and that businesses are looking for when hiring. It seemed like a pretty good fit.

Lynda.com has been rebranded as “A LinkedIn Company,” and is now offering a free trial. For premium accounts, the trial period is 30 days, and for non-paying LinkedIn users it’s 21 (h/t: ReCode).

The site offers numerous courses in the following categories: Developer, Design, Web, Photography, Business, Education, 3D+Animation, Video, and Audio+Music. There are 386 developer courses with over 16,000 video tutorials. In the business category there are over 1,200 courses with over 48,000 video tutorials.

In other words, there’s a whole lot of useful content here. Memberships include unlimited access (including on mobile and with custom playlists).

Here’s what the execs had to say about the acquisition when it was announced:

“The mission of LinkedIn and the mission of lynda.com are highly aligned. Both companies seek to help professionals be better at what they do,” said Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn. “lynda.com’s extensive library of premium video content helps empower people to develop the skills needed to accelerate their careers. When integrated with the hundreds of millions of members and millions of jobs on LinkedIn, lynda.com can change the way in which people connect to opportunity.”

“This is such an exciting moment in the 20-year history of lynda.com, and I couldn’t imagine a better pairing than lynda.com and LinkedIn,” said Lynda Weinman, co-founder and executive chair of the board of lynda.com.

“In LinkedIn, we have found an incredible partner who shares our vision and passion for empowering people around the world to make real change in their lives through access to information, learning and professional development,” said Eric Robison, CEO of lynda.com.

Weiner had a lot more to say about the acquisition here.

Most of Lynda.com’s staff were expected to join LinkedIn. It’s unclear whether or not that actually happened.
